First known use of shaggy-dog was sometime between 1945-1950, about ten years before this movie.  The movie The Shaggy Dog was definitely a shaggy-dog story.  Groan all you want, it was intended.😄

Of course in the 50's and 60's there were a lot of shaggy-dog movies and TV shows.  Jerry Lewis starred in many of them.
