saccade - Word of the Day - Tue Dec 6, 2022




saccade - (noun) - a small rapid jerky movement of the eye especially as it jumps from fixation on one point to another (as in reading)

A good story will generate a regular saccade though some stories have sticky spots where the eye stops.

This is a relatively new word, dating from 1938 and having its origin in French.

Especially noted in speed readers and not to be confused with cicada, an insect that appears every 17 years.
