2023 Poetry Anthology - Announcement

Due to feedback I've received about the poetry anthology, the guidelines have been revised to eliminate the limitation on number of poems submitted.  There is now a maximum word count instead.  The one poem per chapter rule has also been abolished, so multiple poems may be posted in one "chapter", with a maximum of five chapters.  Please review the revised guidelines and let me know if there are any questions.  I have also created threads in the anthology section of the Writer's Club for discussion, links to anthology submissions, and the guidelines.

Thanks for your diligent efforts to revive the poetry anthologies, and for giving them a more flexible framework!

Just to double check, but now that the "story" bucket can have up to five "chapters" (with one or more poems in each "chapter"), we can also submit more than one "story" per anthology? I believe you mentioned that the fiction (that is, non-poetry) anthologies will allow an author to submit up to five "story" chunks (of one or more chapters).

I'm assuming the poetry anthology is the same: a poet may construct up to five poetry collections (the "story" setting) with one to five "chapters" in each. Is this right?

Poetry: So hard!

Some make it so beautiful

Mine just sounds like s***

Good luck to all the Poetry Anthology participants. Can't wait to enjoy the fruits of your efforts.

But, Libby, with only a few minor additions, yours can be beautiful too without any change in meaning...

Poetry: So hard!

Some make it so beautiful

Mine just sounds like soft

Warm horse-apples falling on

Clean newly-spread straw

Sorry, that was a brief trip down memory lane.  When I was in the USAF years ago, we used black grease pencils to write quick notes and reminders on Plexiglas desk protectors - and we wrote what we called "Plexiglas Poetry".  One person would write the first line of a limerick.  The next person to come along would add one more line, etc.  We didn't produce any publishable classics, but we did have fun.  I wonder if that would make a suitable "game" on GA. :)

Looking forward to what the anthology produces.

That's brilliant. LOL

I vote for the haiku game!

Now I can't stop saying "horse-apples".

I'm assuming the poetry anthology is the same: a poet may construct up to five poetry collections (the "story" setting) with one to five "chapters" in each. Is this right?

The anthology has never limited the amount of stories an author may submit, so I would say the same is true for this anthology.  The intent behind specifying that the poetry must be submitted as a single story submission is so that we don't get someone posting, for example, ten different "stories" consisting of one poem each.  For matters of conciseness, it would make more sense to post them all as a single submission.  We don't want to put an undue burden on the site staff who have to move the 'stories' into the anthology category and then publish them once the anthology goes live.

In your case, submitting more than one "story" containing multiple poems of different forms/styles/themes would be fine.  Each "story" or poetry collection, may have one to five "chapters".  I hope this answers your question.  If you need further clarification, please let me know.

I love this!  That sounds like it would definitely make a fun game here :)  In the past, I believe for National Poetry Writing Month, a few site poets participated in writing collaborative poems, where one person wrote one stanza, someone else the next, etc until the poem was finished.  It was fun and quite interesting to see the outcome.

So, I'm sufficiently ignorant that I didn't realize yours was Haiku :blushing:  but I can count to five and seven so I guess we'll have to call the result "Extended Haiku".  A Haiku game would be better than a Limerick game - the results would be more... umm... acceptable.  This was an all-guy squadron, and some of the Plexiglas Poetry results were either pornographic or politically incorrect :blushing:.  The one I can remember was both.  Maybe that's why I can remember it so well 🤭.

I guarantee that's why you remember it so well.
