Yes, kuchen in the kitchen.  Kuchen is actually the German word for cake, but it's actually a mash-up of cake and pie that is topped with a creamy custard.  I'm gaining weight just thinking about it.

That's a pretty good summary. But Kuchen is also the progenitor of the much-loved American coffeecake :) 

1901's Settlement Cook Book bridges the two quite easily, as it was the staple manual for all German and Jewish households in North America -- I was just looking though my 1930s reprint the other day for coconut macaroons
