Isn't that what the definition means? If you don't cross at a designated crossing, it is illegal and unsafe.

Unless you're a rube, then it's just what you do.

I've seen a lot of people cross the street at other than a designated crosswalk without doing it unsafely.  They're just too damn lazy to walk the extra distance to the zebra crossing.

It's still not legal. Being safe is debatable.

I've had my share of close calls at crosswalks.

@Mikiesboy or maybe @Dodger might be able to confirm this...

In downtown Toronto where like most places pedestrians have the right of way, but there they take it literally. Someone walks out of their office in the middle of the block, and want to cross the street, they just cross knowing the cars will stop.

But then again, I haven't really driven in DT Toronto since the 90's. Who knows, maybe things have changed in the past twenty five years and pedestrians are like playing a game of Pacman with your car :D

According to their bylaws, it's legal unless they interfere with traffic.

Jaywalk is a word of purely American origin.

Jaywalking is not in the Criminal Code and is not considered a criminal offence in Canada. No law on jaywalking exists at the federal level, although several provinces and territories in Canada, as well as municipalities, have enacted regulations and/or by-laws that restrict when a pedestrian may cross a roadway.

In Quebec, pedestrians who don't obey the rules laid out in the Highway Safety Code face a fine of $15 to $30.

In Montreal, the police slap more than 3,000 jaywalkers a year with $48 fines.

Now be honest (at least with yourself) have none of you, at some point in your lives, done this no,no?

Let me start, hell yes a bazillion times. I feel so much better for getting that off my chest.

Just remember to look both ways first (guilty yes, stupid no).

My faith in humanity is low enough that I look both directions when crossing a one-way street.
