In reading items created by modern journalists,  you can assume imbecility is a hiring requirement to become a journalist, to say nothing of those that consume such swill anyway.

Politicians seem to rise to the heights of their imbecility and power about the same time most people go senile.

Until the 20th century, when all three terms were scrapped as offensive, imbecile was a clinical term for intellectual disability between idiot and moron.

And some people use the words imbecile, moron, and idiot synonymously for any person who is mentally disabled.  Th is use of the word has diluted the meaning of someone making imbecilic comments from foolish or nonsensical to meaning idiotic or stupid.  It's similar to how the word queer, which means odd or peculiar, came to define people who love someone of the same sex.
