The earliest recorded use of "feline" in English appears in the 16th century, specifically in the works of the English writer and poet, Thomas Nashe, where he used it to describe a cat-like creature in his pamphlet "Have with You to Saffron-Walden" (1596). 
 

The largest cats on each continent is as follows: 
Africa - The lion is the largest cat in Africa. Male lions can weigh up to 500 lbs, while females can weigh up to 400 lbs.  
The next largest cat is the leopard, while the cheetah lives in sub-Saharan Africa and Northern Iran. 

Australia - there is no evidence of wild big cats in Australia. 

Asia - The tiger is the largest cat in Asia. The Siberian tiger is the largest tiger and can weigh up to 380 kg. 
The next largest cat is the snow leopard in Central Asia, Northwestern China, and Tibet. 

Europe - The Eurasian lynx is the largest lynx species and is native to Europe and Siberia. The Iberian lynx is native to the Iberian Peninsula in Southern Europe. 

North and South America - The jaguar is the largest cat in the Americas. It is the third largest cat in the world, after tigers and lions.   
The next largest cat in North and South America. is the cougar, also known as the puma.
