The shillelagh had a different reputation between the Irish and English. To the Irish, it represented their warrior heritage and young boys were formally presented with a shillelagh as a rite of passage. The English viewed the shillilagh as cudgels wielded by hooligans.

As the history of Northern Island shows, both were correct. A chilling example of why we should all oppose religious intolerance in all its forms.
