That's very true, Nephy. I had almost expected to encounter racist attitudes a lot in Texas, but I really haven't. I suppose it was inevitable though.

My roommate's rationale apparently is that because he isn't a racist, it's "ok" for him to use said terms, which is blatant bullshit, but I'm really not interested in arguing with him.

I really haven't encountered anyone who hadn't or wouldn't say n****r or anything alone those lines, even if it is just for a reaction.

And this wasn't some old-looking redneck type either. He was a clean-cut, young guy who didn't even seem to have a southern drawl. I don't get it? Why would a cleanly cut, young guy have something so awful to say?

Not that I'm advocating quarreling, but I think it's often helpful to call people on this type of behaviour. I wouldn't have gotten into an argument with him (which can often weaken the effect anyway), but I might have laughed condescendingly and said something like, "Gee, what an enlightened view." Then walk off. That wouldn't necessarily change his mind or his prejudice, but it might show him that at least it's socially unacceptable and he might get called out on it.

Eh, then again I probably don't know what I'm talking about and it's always easier to give armchair advice.
