EDIT: New problem. Writing sex is its own distraction. Make what you will of that.

 Distracted :P

It is kinda personal to write about sex. For me it is at least. It's not like I'm having sex in the pages but still it feels intimate. Strangely I like to keep it that way. I don't wanna write meaningless scenes in my story. If it moves me then, fine.

Sex in story is only fulfilling for me if there is an emotional foundation for it between the characters, And I do not mean some kind of limited butterflys-in-the stomach natural magnetism. I mean a real foundation of feeling and friendship. On a related note a hate to see this pattern in stories, particularly when there are supernatural protagonists, wherein the leads are genetically meant for eacch other to the point they have an instant overwhelming attraction, whether or not the two people like each other, want to be in a relationship, or even share the same sexuality.

I'm writing a story that hinges on sex. It's the theme, the underlying issue that drives the characters, so when it comes to that, I think including the scenes is integral to understanding the guys I'm writing about. The same way goes when I'm reading a story. I don't mind reading the mushy details (I'll wholeheartedly agree that if it isn't well written, I'll probably skip over it, but that goes for any part of a story, not just the sexy scenes). Especially if they give me an insight as to what the characters are all about and what drives and motivates them.

And let's be honest. Sometimes it's just really fun to read something that's passionate and hot and yes, sexy.

To me, I think it is really about the story. If sex happens, then that is fine and I am the first to admit that when it is well written, I enjoy reading it. But If I wanted a vicarious sexual experience, I would look at porn (or go on a different stories site). What I really like about Gay Authors, is that the emphasis is on being an author; on writing. This is a site about story development and creating characters that you care about. If they happen to have sex, then great, but that is not what I am after when I read the stories here. I love compelling and thought provoking writing; and that's what I often find here.

I'm not embarrassed to read a sex scene in a book, but it's got to be well written. I read all sorts of different genres, books with and without sex in them. If the sex fits in with the story then that's all that matters. I'm not one of these people who goes around burning books just because someone did something rude in them. Good writing is all that matters.

I like the build up more than any sex scene. Especially if there's like chapters of sexual anxiety. When the sex comes (and it usually does) I feel deflated and that the story either has too much sex thereafter or the story just kinda peters out.

I don't mind reading sexy scenes. They're kind of fun to read. I even like reading badly written sexy scenes because they make me laugh. Even if those badly written sexy scenes were written by myself. Posted Image

Anyway, I think everyone else has said this already ... if the sexy scene fits the story, is written well and the characterization is good and there has been a proper build-up to it, then it's great. It all depends on the story, I guess. Different stories, different contexts, different sexy scenes etc.

As long as it's well written, I don't mind if it's few and far between or in every chapter. There's nothing more off-putting and cringe-worthy in a story than badly written sex scenes, especially the ones where a character's cock happens to grow about 3 inches in one chapter over the course of a day. Really?

In some very well written stories that I have read, I can feel the chemistry brewing between the characters. If this chemistry is missing, or it's too early in the story to get an impression of what the character's traits are (unless it's a major plot point), I sometimes just skim over the sex scenes.

I usually try to visualize guys who appeal to me when reading stories, but if the author has me visualizing someone who would be a turn-off, I sometimes skim over those scenes too, but scanning for some plot point hidden in the scene. :P

There's been a lot of talk about sex in stories over the years. I found this one in DomLuka's forum enlightening. There's a link to a similar talk in Comicality's forum as well. Perhaps you'll find some new insights as well.

In regards to the link Dark posted on sex --

Chapter 2 at the latest? Say what??? No, the longer sex is held off and the more the characters sexual tension is exploited(and they are developed as characters), the better, imho.

Sometimes, even in a romance, a simple kiss can hold so much more passion than sex, and sometimes sex does top-off a story. But, you have to think about YOUR story--if it's not necessary to the story--i.e- if it doesn't add anything emotionally/or plot wise--just forgetaboutit.

That being said, as I reader I go through different moods too. That's why different genres exist and why that's a good thing! If I want to read something hot, I'll read erotica -- but I don't expect, nor wish, erotica to be in every other story I read.

haha, of course, I have to admit, I do like a romantic story line/thread (even if a small one) in all the stories I read.
