Former Member Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 I'm interested in utilizing the services of an editor. Also, I've seen the terms mentor and beta reader used here, too. So, how may I access these services? I am trying to write a multi-chapter story and I need help with some technical aspects. I have this story largely written in a very rough draft. My issues are three fold. Firstly, I am an awful speller. Secondly, I am still unclear as to the use of punctuation and grammar. Lastly, and this is where a Mentor of sorts will greatly benefit me, I have ADHD so my attention to details, adherence to deadlines and ability to complete long-term projects is greatly diminished. So, I am seeking someone to help me keep my focus on this story, provide meaningful feedback and to be a friend. Somebody out there please help me.
layla Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 If you go down to the editors corner forum, there is a place there to apply for beta's and editors, it explains the process in the thread as to what to include. You can also talk to editors in the chat room, maybe introduce yourself and strike up a conversation, give them an idea of the genre of your story and what it's going to be about. I'm not an editor, but I wouldn't mind reading and giving you feedback to help you get started with things.

I think the chat room is full of creepy people talking about sex and other really weird things. I'm really not all that comfortable chatting in there.
layla Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Ahh, in that case, definately try the editors corner near the bottom of the forums, that would be the best place to put up information about the story that you're working on and the kind of help that you're looking for.
JamesSavik Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 I tried writers support. They sent me a therapist. 1
Johnathan Colourfield Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Try PM'ing A member of the Writers Support team - they should be able to help. Some of the best people i've worked with (as an editor, as a beta reader, as an author) have been people that I have met in the chatroom and some of them in real life also So it is a useful source, no matter how strange you find the conversation to be.
CassieQ Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Here is a link to Editor's forum where it tells you how you can request a beta reader or editor. https://www.gayauthors.org/forums/topic/32511-to-the-authors/ And JC is right about asking around in chat. It's a little like a playground, so the conversation can get weird, but it is mostly people playing around. Don't be afraid of us. A lot of authors know good editors and beta readers to recommend, so you can always ask one of us. Good luck.
