hohochan657 Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 Hey everyone, I think I was traumatised by having to take a 2-paper exam on Monday ... Okay, okay it was all multiple choice questions and points weren't deducted if you gave a wrong answer, but still it was the first public exam that I have taken in 20 years ... Okay, I passed both papers ( since there were only about 3 questions that require simple arithmetic, and those were limited to one paper only ) ... but I'm still recovering ... 2

Former Member Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 I have a topic to discuss, which we discussed earlier in my seminar. Is a tire a cylinder or not? It was mentioned in a science math text as a cylinder, but we debated it strongly. What are your opinions?

Drew Espinosa Posted June 16, 2017 Author Posted June 16, 2017 I think a tire is a cylinder, more specifically, a hollow cylinder. Of course, this is only my opinion. 2

I think a hollow cylinder fits mostly, the only thing I think about are the edges, which are .... what might be the English word... rounded (?)

Yes, that's the English word. Many objects aren't perfect representations of geometric shapes. For example, the Earth is often called a sphere, but that is misleading, a more accurate shape for the Earth would be an oblate spheroid. However, because Earth is so close to being a sphere, it's fine to call it that shape in everyday conversation. So, bringing this back to tires, it may not be a perfect representation of a hollow cylinder, but it's pretty close. So, I think it's okay to call a tire a hollow cylinder. 4

This is an argument, that I can see. So we declare it a cylinder! q.e.d.

This book was actually published back in 1910, so the language can be dated at times, however it does a great job in explaining its topics. Oh, and the book is now in the Public Domain, so it won't cost you a dime, that's why I linked it to the Gutenberg Project. Here are the Goodreads reviews for you to see what others think about the book. Please tell me what you think, whether you liked it or not. 4

Well mathletes are no match for ninja penguins, narwals, cranky kindergarteners, shark squadron, fluffdragon ferrets, dragons, and my pony. I thought you'd appreciate the eye candy... especially the team captain who competes in a thong 2
