I’m not so sure if it’s not much the same for both. Davin is depressed that he doesn’t have his own family and/or they don’t care. Joel is heartbroken that he is unwanted and he no longer has his family. Davin wanting to leave the sanitarium is not unexpected, but as teens often express leaving town is the only way. It seems to be more than just the sanitarium, it seems to be a more underlying frustration; getting away from his crush, Cole, or just that he can’t easily see being with a boyfriend in his current mindset for the ranch life. it remains to be seen whether Joel is going to connect to the extent that he starts to accept that he’s basically a Connelly if he so choses… I think Joel does need the love and support of family…more than just a boyfriend, but accepted within a family clan that shares.

Understandable as we tend towards comfort and that’s what soothes you or makes you feels better. Growing up my dad was the worst for tolerating anything other than country. Like merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams…senior, and such. He would consider anything much other as radical noise and turn it off or tell you with no room for questions to turn that #&*$ off now.

The cruel reality that some people are a threat to society. The rights of one to do harm should never be allowed to trump the rights of others living normal lives. Claude was a menace to society and could have been stopped at so many points along his path in life. He paid the ultimate price for no one making a proper effort to stem his conduct, that evidently play into the retribution he suffered. But he stalked and tormented up until the end. He chose to ride the bus, he chose to harass the boys all the way to their homes, he chose his own path knowing he was wrong but that no one could stop his fun. Murder is wrong, but it’s hard to feel any remorse that all for Claude. In fact, during his murder, hopefully temporal distortion allowed Claude to see the error in his actions and judgment, as he saw the axe moving in slow motion towards his forehead; perhaps in that brief moment, his soul may have had a chance to regret his own choices towards fratricide.

Dare you not! PLEASE! Retirement is not something I would want to see you do. Hopefully that was spoken totally in jest, but if tickling thoughts are there then I hope you find a different solution to ease your stress than tossing your storytelling gifts and your presence here in the community. i too keep getting the comment locks, or inability to submit. I had to change from sad emoji to angry emoji; that shit is fukd up. That’s like being forced to live as an obsessive compulsive person, when the real OCD ones don’t even stay there. OMG, Joel has Davin ready to face the music, just to get Joel’s story. Ironically, it seems both want it to happen but they both need a little incentive to test the waters. Gavin keeps it simple he doesn’t let it get to him as easily…but then again, he’s the one that bail quickly; does that happen often? What a mess. Gavin expected to return the Trace/Celia’s as apparently it’s more like home. Oh goodness, the unexpected visitors at shower time. 🤦‍♂️ My college roommate hardly came by our place after becoming very involved with his girlfriend; if he did, it was usually mornings. My new friend of which seemed to have interest had come over from a just a little shared time while catching a bite before studying. Sexual puns and innuendo were becoming more frequent between us, until he confessed an old friend group growing up had a circle jerk at times. I was surprised but rather inquisitive. He took that as an all clear and confessed it wasn’t always just jerking off, as he had sucked off some of them. Soon we shared a math problem; only to find taking away 2 from 69 equals…a mess possible mess as being new, did you swallow, did you dribble, or just help the partner feel those strokes by new hands. 🤔. So while showering and laughing a bit about studying hard, all of a sudden the stereo turned on, loudly, in the living room. 😬 Well hell, never say never as that evening the roommate dropped by to pick up some things, only a find…rub-a-dub-dub two guys in my tub. 🤦‍♂️ With an awkward exit from the bath I spoke casually about good to see him. Are you and the girlfriend doing ok? are you staying the night today? He was somewhat distracted as he was still sure the other voice would soon have a face. He told others and rumors and harassment started, and kept getting worse. The new fwb and I got a duplex apartment shortly after that. Ironically, his girlfriend turned wife’s brother turns out to be gay and yet the awkwardness of that afternoon still haunts us. We had good times and so much in common back then, and even had very similar careers. Yet, while staying in touch casually, we’re not the friends we would have been and/or remained had that overreaction and disclosure not have happened…to his roommate/friend. So being door checked after showering with a boyfriend is certainly not for unexpected guests.

Nor did he try to barge in past JJ as his little strategically timed opportunity to try an reclaim his oppressive dad title. Oh dear officers, my hand must have inadvertently hit that panic button. Mr G is in a tough spot; if he advocates then he’s part of the problem, if he stays he can still help boys through these years but perhaps including privacy and discretion…great discretion due to the Karens of their environment. If he discloses too much to the boys, then it could dampen the success of surviving either plan. He is attached, I feel he is hurting too. The condoms and quick “father” talk as well as speaking to Nick’s mom of the talk shows caring well beyond his dorm guardian scope. Could there be outside ties to the community? Self? Family? Friends? Or any of those lost to AIDS. From the generation of the Gay Plague being first diagnosed, then Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, I lost friends and acquaintances to AIDS myself; and didn’t fully understand even then, how fortunate I had been to not have been infected by an STD…which became Sexually Transmitted Death vs Disease. So the boys get to live their social studies lessons vs reading about other cases. I hope to see the students stand…or sit, United; getting more parents involved to offset the Karens is a start. That will likewise speak to the coffers but bigger than that, a school of its renown has to have a parent in news, lawyers, and pediatricians/doctors that can dispel the cries of unhealthy. Whereas, these policies themselves are more harmful to development and mental health. 🤦‍♂️

I look back and see things I did in my younger years, particularly during college, as I had a full credit load of engineering classes. already working to pay my own way, but I still decided to also add flying into my college goals. So work was sometimes 33-52 hours a week, on top of classes/labs, and flying lesson 2-3 times a week. I felt as if I was literally meeting myself coming and going on 4-5 hours rest. I was one whipped puppy…but the drive to reach my goal kept me well and able to cross the finish line. Do I ever want to do that again? NO! But if I was to get a do over, would I change anything? NO! I’m so happy you get to claim a victory that makes you happy to have that accomplishment to your name; that’s not an easy task, nor one that many can do with true storytelling skills; then to bare your work and soul to public scrutiny, wow. 🤯 That’s back to feeling like a teenager not wanting to try something with others to witness.. 😱

Despite frustrations that you may have been experiencing in that long period, you hung in there and gave a great story the ending it deserved. Too often it seems the authors lose their drive or will to continue. They won’t totally abandon it, but only give it a rapid, inconsistent, ending with loose ends; a final chapter with little depth that seems as if another author stepped in to give it an ending. The Best Year is classic to me. You captured a year that to many seems to move rapidly on one hand, yet happens at a time in life where there are so many things and events we later recall; milestones towards transitioning to mature adults, emotionally and intellectually, dare I say becoming self aware and starting to find their on way in life. The characters were so very real and we got to see the maturing and transitioning as it happened, the good and the bad; in a very real fashion. But we also got a taste for parents transitioning from nurturing kids to encouraging or accepting that those kids were becoming adults…with their own life and decisions. Again, I think it is a classic coming of age story, beyond the typical quick summary events that often narrow the portrayed coming out or finding love.
