Hi Page. We're okay. You didn't offend me. I know modern Groundhog Day is silly and in places where it's celebrated most of that celebration is over the top spoof. However, remember that holiday is based on a tradition that predates most of what we know as science. Science for them was studying the cycles of the sun, moon and stars. The behavior of animals and nature around them. February was a cold, dark and hungry time. Eagerly awaiting the return of light and warmth and more abundant food was and still is a primal human trait when you lack any of them. Science says reindeer can't fly and physics suggests it's impossible for a fat man in a red suit to fit down a chimney, elf or not and yet those thoughts make for a lot of very happy kids in the middle of the darkest time of year. So embrace the silly as a reminder that we dwell in a far different time then those who came before.

Also, the earliest tradition in Germany actually favored the badger (isn't MI the "badger state") but those aren't prevalent in eastern PA. Instead they switched to another hibernating mammal the groundhog. A member of the marmot family. Actually, forecasting the weather on February 1/2 is a long held Celtic custom. Imbolc is celebrated then, being one of the four cross days. The others are celebrated on May 1, August 1st and Nov. 1st. Cross days are the mid point between the solstice and the equinox. Now, wouldn't it have been better to simply nod and smile and avoid this lecture. Oh, there will be a quiz that counts as half your grade.
