That was one of the reasons I liked Star Trek so much. Many of my favorite authors wrote either the story and/or the script for the series (most of the original series'). Damon Knight, huh? I didn't know that.

Benteen is a colony planet, cut off from Earth for the last 300 years. The colonists have done their best to keep what technology they were left with, operational. Young Jem is a hunter from the uplands of Northern New Australia. He has reached the age of adulthood and goes to seek his adventure on an orx hunter ship, down in Nocksic Bay. There he meets several people who become friends and one who becomes more than just a friend. Along the way to learning how to hunt orx, Jem and the crew discover a mystery no one ever dreamed of finding. Once again the fertile mind of Geron Kees weaves us another enticing tale!

How to get their new-found friends to stay on Benteen? I think Jem and Nico have it right. We finally see what a "Protector" is. Both in who Mr. Mikulsa is and what the alien Azim is. And that! It was the best thing that Jem could do. The Azim wanted to know if Jem meant what he said. How else to know but to put it to the test? Lucky for Jem the alien's medical is far in advance of human medical.

However Ahmet was treated, it was much better than how Matt was treated. Else Matt would not have been reduced to the Market. I am happy that you didn't show whatever it was that Matt went through. Personally, I don't think that a future meeting between Ahmet and Matt is in the cards. Mostly because of the ever-present threat Kanaan poses to Ahmet. We also have to remember that at this point, Matt has no identity. So there is no real way for Matt to get to Istanbul should he discover where Ahmet is. We also don't know if the feelings that Matt has for Ahmet are real or not. Lots of emotions are used as coping mechanisms when you are in captivity.

That part of Montana (trego and the Whitefish area) is one of the most beautiful areas in the State. Down here, in the high desert of Idaho (Magiv Valley) where I live, our native Americans are the Shoshone. While they and the Blackfeet were nominally enemies, their culture toward genders is much the same. I know I've read this story somewhere else, but it was so long ago I don't remember where or when. It was nice to be able to read it again!

I suspect if any are answered, it will only be a few of them. The aliens, at this point, are far too different from us for any meaningful exchange.

O M G! Sooo, the Righoff lines have reformed and more humans are coming. The alien protectors are insisting that the aliens leave the planet. Perhaps not so much to save his people, but because the humans were here first? Whatever the reasons, Bzup-kind is leaving.

Yes, Tim. I stayed on the bus. I did enjoy the rest of the story. I cried at chapter 6. I can see why it was hard for you to write. Max turned out to be such a real person, much like Louis and Don. I can't say which chapter was my favorite, as I'd be here the rest of the morning, writing about them all. 😁 So I'll just say thank you for the ride. It was very, very enjoyable! -

After being confined to the colony ship for so long, it had to be special to get out and goof around on the surface of their new world! -
Bzup told them to land anywhere near his people's ship. So I'm assuming an entrance can be made anywhere in the circumference of the ship. Sorta reminds me of a Vorlon ship from Babylon 5.

Shades of String Theory! They have essentially found Gravitons. A particle posited within String Theory. @Geron Kees is delving into particle physics. Up until now, First Contact has been an abstract concept. Whatever might have been written about it, is a subject I suspect would only be found on Earth. Not on a colony world 300 years out of touch with the home planet.
