The unofficial holiday encourages people to do some late spring-cleaning and to make space for newer, more useful things in their lives. Have you ever noticed how easy it is to collect useless things? Get rid of things that you don't need anymore and de-clutter your house, workspace and your life on Pack Rat Day. Collector of Useless Objects Pack rat is the term used to describe a person who tends to collect objects - useful and useless - and does not easily get rid of them. While many of us can be pack rats in certain areas of our lives, being a hoarder can be a serious issue. In many people, the pack rat behavior can create major mental and physical health issues. Distracted Woodrats The term pack rat comes from the rodent of the same name. Also called woodrats, these rodents are known to be nesters. They collect anything they can find to make their nests. They are known to get distracted by shiny new things - if they see something they like, they will drop what they are currently holding to get the shiny new item for their nest! How to Celebrate? Collecting is not always a bad thing. Whether it is baseball cards, vintage chocolate wrappers or old cars, Pack Rat Day is a reminder that there is a fine line between collecting and hoarding and that sometimes it is ok to get rid of old things to make way for newer things. Here are some ways to observe this holiday: Take the day off to do some organizing. Throw away or donate anything you haven't used for over 6 months. If you know of someone who is a hoarder, get them some help. Hoarding can sometimes become a problem that can have a negative effect on a person's life. Read more about actual pack rats, rodents who pick up shiny objects and leave pebbles and nuts in their place. Did You Know… ...that fossilized pack rat middens are a rich source of information about the history of the environment in the area? Middens are debris piles created by the materials collected by the rodents and preserved by their urine. The oldest middens found were about 50,000 years old. *** Thank you for calling the Weight Loss Hotline. In the United States, the unofficial holiday is also known as National Chocolate Chip Day. An Accidental Invention Also sometimes called chocolate morsels, rumor has it that chocolate chips were invented by Ruth Wakefield at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. According to the legend, the creation of the chips was an accident – out of chocolate powder while making cookies for guests, Ruth chopped up some chocolate and added it to the cookie dough. She found that the chocolate did not melt as she had expected, and the chocolate chip and the chocolate chip cookie was born. Named After the Inn After chocolate chip cookies became popular and successful, Nestlé made an agreement with Ruth to add her chocolate chip cookie recipe to the packaging of their chocolate bars. Nestlé's brand, Toll House Cookies, is named after Toll House Inn. Today, chocolate chips are a popular ingredient in a baker's pantry and they are used extensively in cookies, cakes, ice creams and a variety of other desserts. How to Celebrate? Add chocolate chips to all your meals of the day. Start your day by making chocolate chip pancakes or adding chocolate chips to your cereal. For your midday snack, whip up a batch of chocolate chip cookies or chocolate chip muffins. Throw some chocolate chips in your lunch yogurt and end the day with some delicious chocolate chip ice cream. Did You Know… …that chocolate was once used as currency by the Aztecs? The song, sometimes also known as the Birdie Song, was composed in the 1950s by Swiss composer Werner Thomas. Accompanied by a series of movements, the song soon became popular in the West, especially in the United States, where it was performed at parties and weddings. The dance mimics the movements of a chicken and includes flapping of arms and wriggling of the body. How to Celebrate? Have a chicken dance dance-off. It is an unofficial holiday that encourages people to read and write limericks, a genre of humorous poetry that first originated in England in the 18th century. Book of Nonsense Limerick Day, also sometimes called National Limerick Day honors the birthday of Edward Lear, English poet, and author. Born in 1812, Lear popularized this form of poetry in his 1846 book called A Book of Nonsense. It is believed that the term limerick refers to this specific genre of poetry which comes from the city of Limerick, Ireland. 5 Lines & AABBA Scheme Limerick is a genre of poetry that traditionally has 5 lines and has an AABBA rhyme scheme. A rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhymes in a poem. To identify a poem's rhyme scheme, each line is designated with a letter. Lines that share a letter rhyme have words at the end that rhyme with each other. This means that in a limerick, which has an AABBA rhyme scheme, the words at the end of the first, second and fifth sentences rhyme, while the words at the end of the third and fourth sentence rhyme with each other. Humorous Situations Traditionally, the first line of a limerick introduced a person and a place and the rest of the poem described a humorous and often times obscene situation involving the subject or the place. How to Celebrate? Celebrate Limerick Day by reading some of Lear's limericks. Also, check out other poets' limericks as well. Write your own limericks and share them with your family and friends. The day aims to recognize school nurses and acknowledge their role in the educational setting. Ensure Well-Being of Children School nurses are nursing practitioners usually affiliated with a school or an educational institution. School nurses are one of the first lines of medical professionals to ensure the health and mental well-being of school going children and young adults. They are also responsible for monitoring that children in schools are achieving their developmental milestones as well as ensuring that their lives outside the school are safe and healthy. National Nurse Week National School Nurse Day, also known as School Nurse Day, is celebrated during National Nurse Week, which runs annually from May 6 to May 12. May 6 is celebrated as National Nurses Day, while May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale is celebrated worldwide as International Nurses Day. How to Celebrate? Thank your school nurse for taking care of you. Learn more about what school nurses do. Nothing Is as It Seems Twilight Zone was created by Rod Serling, who was also the show's host and narrator. The show is a collection of unrelated stories where nothing is as it seems and the end is usually always bizarre and unexpected. The stories on the show combined the features of science fiction, psychological thrillers, drama, horror, and fantasy and were based in the twilight zone. The Fifth Dimension The twilight zone according to the narrator at the beginning of each episode of the show is a “...fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge...” Most Watched TV Show The show made its debut in the United States in October 1959, to immediate critical acclaim, though it took a few years for it to gain popular success. Today, the Twilight Zone is considered to be one of the best and one of the most watched TV shows of all times. No one knows who created this holiday or why they chose May 11 to honor this creepy, but fun holiday. How to Celebrate? Do a Twilight Zone marathon. It is also Eat What You Want Day, so get all the fun food you can eat, and park yourself in front of the TV and spend the day watching episodes of the Twilight Zone back to back. Gather your friends and have a Twilight Zone themed party. Fancy yourself as a sci-fi writer? Why not spend the day writing some Twilight Zone inspired fan fiction? Did You Know… ...that Rod Serling was not the first choice for the narrator? Orson Welles was initially approached by Serling to play the role, but wasn't able to get him. ~~~~~~~ Eat What You Want Day Break all, but one of your dietary rules on May 11 or Eat What You Want Day. The only rule you must obey is, of course, eat what you want, however you want it, how much you want it! Trash the Trash Also sometimes called the National Clean Up Your Room Day, this holiday of unknown origins aims at keeping the dust bunnies where they belong - the trash. The holiday promotes clean rooms and homes and encourages people to collect their cleaning supplies, don their cleaning clothes and gloves, and spend the day spring cleaning. Spring Cleaning Spring cleaning is a practice in many cultures where people clean their homes thoroughly once a year on the first warm day of spring. It is thought that this practice dates back to the days when people lit fires to keep warm during cold winter months. The first warm day of spring allowed people to open their windows and doors and to get rid of all the soot and ash that collected over the winter. Even though Clean Your Room Day falls towards the end of the Spring season in the Northern Hemisphere, and Fall (Autumn) in the Southern Hemisphere, it is a good day as any to get cracking on the dusting, scrubbing, and organizing. And who knows, you may just find that thing you were looking for forever hiding in some dusty corner of your room. How to Celebrate? Clean up your room and resolve to keep it clean every day. Give away or throw any unwanted items or pieces of clothing that you no longer use. If you have children, teach them about the virtues of a clean room. Help them organize their toys and books and reward them for keeping their room clean. Get the family together and make cleaning a fun chore. Put on some fun music and dance while you clean. Give out rewards for milestones crossed - fastest time taken to clean, best organizer, and room with the least amount of dust. EU institutions in Brussels and Strasbourg hold open days where they organize public outreach events. Other E.U. countries and cities hold festivals, concerts, and other events to raise awareness about the E.U. If you don’t live in an EU member state, do not despair - you can learn more about the E.U. in many other ways. Find out if the E.U. expat community in your city is having public events that you can attend. And if there is nothing going on, remember that Europe Day is at its heart a day to celebrate peace and unity, and you don’t have to be in the European Union to do that! Did You Know… …that when the Euro was introduced in 2002, the initials for the countries adopting the currency spelled BAFFLING PIGS? The countries were Belgium, Austria, Finland, France, Luxembourg, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Spain. ~~~~~~~ Lost Sock Memorial Day Lost Sock Memorial Day on May 9 is a day to commemorate lost socks. The unofficial holiday also encourages people to let go of all the remaining single socks they are collecting in hopes of finding their partners one day. There are few mysteries in life that are as perplexing as the mystery of the missing sock. No matter how hard you try to keep pairs of socks together, invariably one of them ventures out into the netherworld never to be found again. Lost Sock Memorial Day is a day to honor all those disappeared socks. How to Celebrate Throw out all the single leftover socks. Use the leftover socks as cleaning cloths. Or spend the day making sock monkeys out of the socks that have sadly lost their partners to the sock blackhole. Have a minute of silence for all the socks you have lost. Did You Know… ...that the feet have about 250,000 sweat glands that are capable of producing about 1 cup of sweat a day? *** One of our hotel guests complained to me about a spraying showerhead: "I can't get in the shower without getting wet!" *** En route to Hawaii, I noticed one of my passengers in the coach section of the airplane dialing her cell phone. "Excuse me. That can't be on during the flight," I reminded her. "Besides, we're over the ocean—you won't get a signal out here." "That's okay," she said. "I'm just calling my daughter. She's sitting up in first class." *** A couple of dog owners are arguing about whose pet is smarter. "My dog is so smart," says the first owner, "that every morning he waits for the paperboy to come around. He tips the kid and then brings the newspaper to me, along with my morning coffee." "I know," says the second owner. "How do you know?" "My dog told me." *** I got mugged by a magician. They are the property of the building, and our maintenance staff will take care of them. They may have already been watered, in which case you will be overwatering them. Besides, these plants are fake." *** Our coworker Patrick shared his worst workday ever. He was at an appliance store and the delivery truck had broken down, which meant he was flooded with angry phone calls from customers. One irate caller canceled the delivery and told Patrick what he could do with it. "I'm sorry," said Patrick. "That's impossible. I already have a stove, a vacuum cleaner, and a microwave up there." *** In lectures on human genetics, I explained to my college students that males determine the sex of the offspring by contributing either an X or a Y chromosome. In the spring, the holiday is held on the Saturday closest to the First Quarter Moon between the months of April and May, while in the fall (autumn) it occurs on a Saturday closest to the Quarter Moon between September and October. Created in 1973 Astronomy Day was created in 1973 by Doug Berger, then president of the Astronomical Association of Northern California. The unofficial holiday is an attempt to raise the interest of the general public in astronomy by giving them easy access to astronomical instruments such as telescopes. The holiday also seeks to bridge the knowledge gap by giving the public a chance to interact with astronomers and space scientists. Observe the Sky On the day, museums, observatories, universities, and astronomy clubs around the world set up easily accessible telescopes in public spaces including schools, parks, and shopping malls to allow people to observe the skies during the day and night. Other events include lectures and conferences, educational outreach, exhibitions, and essay competitions. An Ancient Science Astronomy is the study of celestial bodies and non-Earthly phenomena. It deals with objects like the planets, stars, and asteroids as well as events such as eclipses and meteor showers. Studied since ancient times, the field of astronomy originated and evolved over millennia due to the need for humans to understand the history and science of the Earth and to comprehend the causes of celestial events. Until very recently, astronomy and astrology were seen as related fields of study. It was only in the 17th century that they separated ways. Today, astrology is seen as a field that deals with spirituality rather than science. How to Celebrate? Attend a local Astronomy Day event. Bring family and friends with you and spend some time gazing at the sky through the lenses of a telescope. Learn more about astronomy and how to study it as an amateur astronomer. You can start here. If you have children in your life, today is the perfect day to introduce them to the magic of astronomy. Who knows, they may grow up to become the next Carl Sagan or Carolyn Shoemaker! Did You Know... ...that we can actually see the past? Light from distant stars take a very long time to reach the Earth, so when we look at a star through a telescope we are looking at the light that left the star several hundred, thousands or even million years ago! ~~~~~~~ Herb Day Herb Day is an unofficial holiday annually celebrated on the first Saturday of May. Created and organized by the HerbDay Coalition, an organization of five non-profit groups, the holiday encourages people to learn more about herbs and use them more extensively in their daily lives. The holiday, which first began in 2006 in the United States, brings together herbalists, gardeners, manufacturers of herbal products, culinarians and home cooks, and the general public. It attempts to spread knowledge about the medicinal, culinary and cosmetic benefits of herbs. Different From Spices Botanically, herbs are green parts of a plant that are used in food, medicine or as additional flavoring. They are usually leaves and can be used fresh or dried. Herbs are distinct from spices, which are usually dried or processed non-leafy – seeds, barks, roots, or stems – parts of a plant or a tree. Worshiped Plants People around the world use herbs for cooking and for medicinal purposes. Some cultures consider herbs as having spiritual qualities and extensively use them during religious ceremonies. In India for example, basil is considered to be a holy plant and is worshiped in many parts of the country. How to Celebrate? Learn more about different kind of herbs and their uses. Start a small herb garden in your kitchen – herbs are easy to grow and they will make your kitchen smell nice. Did You Know… …that some people perceive the taste of cilantro or coriander as being soapy and like eating bugs? Studies have shown that this is because they have a special olfactory receptor gene called OR6A2, that makes them sensitive to the aldehyde chemicals found in the herb. ~~~~~~~ Free Comic Book Day The first Saturday of May every year is celebrated around the world as Free Comic Book Day. On this day, participating specialty comic book stores give out free comics to anyone visiting their stores. The holiday has three main aims – to create new comic book readers, to show appreciation to current comic book fans, and to bring back former comic book readers by reminding them about the joy of reading comic books. The holiday also encourages people to get acquainted with the art and science of comic books and to patronize their local comic book stores. The unofficial holiday was first observed in the United States and Canada in 2002. It has now become a popular holiday around the world. Following the footsteps of Free Comic Book Day, German, Austrian, and Swiss comic book industry and stores started their own version of the unofficial holiday in 2010. Gratis Comic Tag as the holiday is called, is celebrated annually on the second Saturday of May. Comic book stores in the Netherlands and Belgium celebrate Free Comic Book Day on the first Saturday and Sunday of May. How to Celebrate? Visit your local participating comic store and get your free copy of a comic. If you have kids in your life, why not take this day to introduce them to the world of comic books? Did You Know… …that typographic symbols used in comics to represent profanity are known as grawlixes? *** With a party going full bore in the apartment above his, my friend could forget about getting any sleep. The next day, he spotted the offending party giver. "Didn't you hear me pounding on the ceiling?" he asked. The woman smiled pleasantly. "That's okay. Celebrated mostly in the United States, it calls for participants to spend their day without wearing pants in public. Participants are encouraged to act as if not wearing pants is a normal thing to do. It is unclear when No Pants Day began and who started it. There are accounts that suggest that the first No Pants Day occurred in 1985 or 1986, while other accounts credit the Austin, Texas-based humor organization, the Knighthood of BUH, for starting the day. No Pants Day is sometimes confused with No Pants Subway Ride Day, which is held in the month of January. The first No Pants Subway Ride Day was held in New York City in 2002 with only 7 riders who went on the New York City Subway without their pants. The event was organized by Improv Everywhere, a humor organization. Since then the Day has been celebrated in many different cities around the world. Improv Everywhere announces the date for the No Pants Subway Ride Day a month in advance. How to Celebrate? Spend the day wearing no pants. Appear in public without your pants on. If you are uncomfortable going out without your pants on, what about wearing a skirt, dress or a kilt? Did You Know… ...that the word pants is derived from the term pantaloons, which in turn comes from pantaloun, an Italian term used to describe a man who wears tight trousers? Pantaloun in turn came from the name of San Pantaleone, a Christian saint, who survived 6 execution attempts. San Pantaleone meant all lion and later the term came to be used to refer to a foolishly brave person represented in comedy as someone wearing tight trousers. ~~~~~~~ Space Day Space Day is celebrated annually on the first Friday of May. An unofficial educational holiday created in 1997 by Lockheed Martin, Space Day aims to promote the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields among young people. The day also encourages the public and especially the youth to learn more about space and space exploration. Space, also called outer space refers to the void that exists between the Earth's upper atmosphere and other celestial bodies in the known and unknown universe. While the term space might make it seem like the vast expanse of the universe beyond the Earth's atmosphere is empty, it is in fact, not empty at all. Space is full of different form of radiation and lots of debris from the formation of our solar system. Some of this debris is in the form of meteors, comets, and asteroids. The unofficial holiday is also sometimes known as International Space Day or National Space Day. How to Celebrate Look for Space Day events close to you and take the young people in your life to attend some of these events. If you do not have any events close to you, why not create one? Visit your closest space museum and spend the day exploring the exhibitions and learn more about astronomy. Did You Know… ...that one cannot hear any sound in space? Sound travels from one point to another by making vibrations in molecules and atoms. Because there is no air, and therefore no medium through which sound can travel, outer space is eerily quiet. ~~~~~~~ Beverage Day Raise a glass to all your favorite beverages on Beverage Day. This unofficial holiday is celebrated annually on May 6 and is also sometimes called National Beverage Day. While the origins of Beverage Day are unknown, we can all safely assume that the day encourages people to honor their beverages of choice and acknowledge that a humble beverage has the power to make or break many situations. A good beverage can energize you after a long, tiring day. It can also make a long, boring meal go fast, it can bring together two strangers, and it can make a party more fun. Whether your preferred beverage is a hot cup of tea, a delicious and healthy smoothie, or a tall glass of lemonade, Beverage Day is the perfect excuse to indulge yourself by drinking it all day long. Sit back, relax and celebrate the day with your favorite beverage. It could be anything from something as simple as water to a fancy cocktail. Try new beverages. What about tasting the national drink of a country you have never visited? Have a tasting party at home. Pick up a beverage you and your guests like and make or find different versions of it to taste and try. For example, you could do a beer or wine tasting party or a tea or coffee tasting party. Have each of your guests bring their favorite brand of beverage to share and serve foods that pair with the beverage of your choice. Who knows, you may just find your next favorite beverage at one of these parties! Did You Know… …that in common usage, water isn't usually considered to be a beverage? *** I was leading a tour through Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico when a woman asked, "How many miles of undiscovered passageways are there in this cave?" *** A customer called our rental store to ask about rectangular tables. It is one of the two days in a year that recognizes the place of the Star Wars franchise in popular culture. The date for this unofficial fun holiday comes from the often-quoted phrase within the Star Wars universe, may the force be with you. The expression was first used in the first film of the original trilogy, A New Hope. Characters use it to wish others good luck, usually while parting ways. Fans around the world have modified the expression to create the pun May the fourth be with you. On May 5, fans celebrate Revenge of the Fifth, a play on the title of the sixth movie in the series, Revenge of the Sith. Some Star Wars enthusiasts celebrate it on May 6 stating that Revenge of the Sixth sounds much closer to the original movie name. British Origins The origin of the phrase is thought to date back to May 4, 1979. On this day, Conservatives in the United Kingdom published a newspaper advertisement to congratulate their candidate, Margaret Thatcher, for taking the Prime Minister's office. The advertisement said "May The Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations". Galaxy Far, Far Away Star Wars is a film series and franchise created by George Lucas. The film series follows events in a galaxy "far, far away" in the "distant past." The other Star Wars Day celebrated in the year is May 25. It marks the release anniversary of the first movie in the series, A New Hope, in 1977. This day is also sometimes known as Geek Pride Day. May 25 is also Towel Day, which celebrates the hugely popular science fiction comedy, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (H2G2) by Douglas Adams. Admirers of the Star Wars franchise observe May 21 as Talk like Yoda Day to mark the first time the much-loved character Yoda made his big-screen debut in the United States. How to Celebrate? Dress up like Star Wars characters and have a Star Wars-themed party. Greet everyone you meet with the phrase May the fourth be with you. While the origins of this holiday are unknown, the general consensus is that the day commemorates the date in 1939 when the crime fighter made his debut in the Detective Comics Batman is a fictional superhero created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger and published by DC Comics. The superhero who made his first appearance in May 1939 is also sometimes known as The Dark Knight and the Caped Crusader. His real name, however, is Bruce Wayne, a billionaire who wears a bat costume while combating crime in the fictional Gotham City. How to Celebrate? Like us, most you of you probably do not need an excuse to revisit your favorite Batman comics, but if you do, today is a good day to do some marathon Batman comic reading. Wear a cape and go to work in your Batman costume. Watch any of the several Batman movies out there with family and friends. Maybe you could combine it with a Batman themed costume party? End it with a day that celebrates and acknowledges the importance of honesty – Honesty Day. Celebrated annually on April 30, the day was created in the early 1990s by M. Hirsh Goldberg, the former press secretary to the state of Maryland in the United States. Speak the Truth Goldberg created the holiday as a way to encourage people to speak the truth and to "honor the honorable." A Rare Quality Famous American singer-songwriter, Billy Joel once sang that honesty is such a lonely word, suggesting that honesty is a very rare quality in all kinds of relationships - personal, professional, and social. This unofficial holiday, also sometimes called National Honesty Day, emphasizes that honesty does not need to be a lonely word and that truthfulness can strengthen relationships and make them more productive. We all tend to take for granted most things around us. The humble zipper that is holding up your pants, skirt, or dress right now is one of those things. Swedish-American Invention This unofficial holiday commemorates the day in 1913 when Swedish-American engineer, Gideon Sundback received the patent for the modern-day zipper. Before Sundback came up with his tool, there were many versions of this wondrous device, without which, being fashionable today may have just been a bit harder. World's Fair Debut One of the first recorded versions of the zipper came in 1851 from Elias Howe - an American inventor who is often credited as a developer of the technology for sewing machines. In the late 19th century, Whitcomb Judson invented a clasp locker which made its debut at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. This invention did not catch on as well as Judson had hoped for but it did earn him the title of the Inventor of the Zipper. How to Celebrate? It is such a simple thing, but a zipper makes our lives so much easier. Spend the day contemplating on other similar objects that are simple, but vital to our day to day lives. The day, now run by Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Foundation, encourages parents to take their children to work so that they can understand the meaning of work-life balance and pride in one's work. Without Gender Limitations According to the Foundation’s website, the day “encourages girls and boys to dream without gender limitations and to think imaginatively about their family, work and community lives”. The day is celebrated on a Thursday so that kids can share their experiences in school the next day. First for Girls The day was first created by Gloria Steinem and the Ms. Foundation for Women in 1993 as Take Our Daughters to Work Day in recognition of the fact that young girls were often excluded from certain professions and had limited job opportunities. The unofficial holiday aimed to give girls the opportunity to see different workspaces and environments. In 2003, boys were also included in the celebration of the day. How to Celebrate? Take your child to work. If you do not have children, maybe take your niece or nephew or a friends’ kid to work. Because of this, Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell declared April 26 as National Pretzel Day in 2003. ~~~~~~~ Richter Scale Day April 26 is Richter Scale Day. The unofficial holiday honors the life and work of American seismologist Charles Francis Richter. Born on this day in 1900, Richter was the inventor of the Richter magnitude scale that measures the intensity of earthquakes. From 1935 Known more commonly as the Richter scale, the scale was invented by Richter in 1935. It measures the magnitude of an earthquake on a logarithmic scale of 0 to 10. Each number on the scale refers to an event that is 10 times more powerful than an event with a number before it. This means an earthquake with a magnitude of 4 is 10 times stronger, and releases approximately 32 times more energy, than an earthquake with a magnitude of 3. Modern Replacements The Richter scale has now been replaced by more modern scales that calculate the magnitude and strength of earthquakes around the world. Despite this, the media commonly, but mistakenly, uses the term Richter scale when identifying the device that measures earthquakes. How to Celebrate? Learn more about the Richter scale and how it is used to measure the intensity of earthquakes. Visit your local space or science museum to learn more about earthquakes and what causes them.
