Chapter 81: Final Chapter
impunity commented on Mark Arbour's story chapter in Chapter 81: Final Chapter
Mark. I really appreciate the additional insights not only into the Granger family history and George's inheritance from Lady Kendal, but also the difficult situation many young women found themselves in, and their lack of choices when navigating the transition to adulthood. It further highlights the importance of George's decision a couple of chapters ago to educate his daughters. They'll have not only the money they need but also the knowledge and skills to pursue their dreams, whether the Duke of Norfolk or some other pursuit. Thanks for another phenomenal novel. Looking forward to the next one.- 57 comments

The plot thickens...as it always does when Mark is involved.

I feel like after that chapter I might need a hug, too. Thanks, Mark. The drama is definitely ratcheting up now.

There may have been a clue in the way Jake ran up the stairs to get there.

The highest point on the roller coaster is actually the calmest. It climbs slowly (, building suspense)) then almost stops for a few seconds at the top before starting the dramatic fall. It feels to me like we're beginning the drop with all the drama in this chapter. But I agree, we have not reached the climax of this story. I'm sure we're in for a whole lot of twists and turns on the way down.

Well, that was dramatic. And with that we're over the peak of this roller coaster. Who knows how far this thing is going to fall? (Well, Mark does, but not sure that counts.) Thanks, Mark, awesome as always.

I love how well Travis has integrated into the Crampton-Schluter family. Through his relationship with Will, Travis has gained two surrogate grandfathers who are clearly committed to advancing his welfare, even if one of them does make him do homework. And now the European idyll is over. Things will no doubt heat up when they return to California. Thanks, Mark!

Or maybe not.

Things between Will and Travis are so good right now but things still feel ominous. Fortunately there's a Grand plan in the works. Thanks, Mark!

There's nothing quite so dramatic as an unexpected dinner guest with news. As bad as the news was, I'm glad Granger and St. Vincent have reconciled. Getting this sort of news with no immediate way to obtain more must have been incredibly frustrating. At this point, we can only hope for the best for Calvert (and trust that our author will not wield the proverbial pen too cruelly). Gatling's parents were awful but what can one expect from innkeepers, and nouveau innkeepers at that? Also Winkler! Thanks, Mark! Loved this chapter.

Everything is always better when Stef is around. I loved the mentorship session. Thanks, Mark! Great chapter.

Sometimes I think @PrivateTim loses sight of the fact that Will is not in control of his own actions. To paraphrase Jessica Rabbit, Will's not bad, he's just written that way. So it's really all Mark's fault and we should direct any negative feedback there. 😉

Finally, Stef has arrived and the shopping has begun. 😄 I will echo what others have noted: this was a fun, lighthearted chapter but in the background you can hear the car climbing to the peak of the roller coaster with no way of knowing how far it's going to fall. Thanks, Mark, awesome as always.

Faces for Mark's Stories
impunity replied to methodwriter85's topic in Mark Arbour Fan Club's Topics
@methodwriter85 I cannot picture Will reading Harry Potter. Haha. -
Brad's handling of the situation with Curtis was impressive but I can't help feeling sorry for Sierra Gardner who was the unwitting pawn in the standoff between two powerful men. It seems unlikely that Curtis will suffer any consequences for raping her now that it's effectively been hushed up by Brad's blackmailing him. The aftermath of the Buck Industries takeover also revealed just how clueless Travis was about what would be involved in acquiring a bankrupt company, especially one with such entrenched problems with its executive leadership. Looking forward to some interesting conversations when Stef arrives.

I just reread all of CAP, too. Pretty sure there have only been two of them. -
Cured salmon is pretty good. If it has to be cooked, I prefer it roasted.
-
I have no recollection of this comment on the undesirability of poached salmon, but I stand behind it 100%. Meats should not be cooked in hot water. Salmon is best eaten raw.

Jake Pike (Will's lawyer) is now Brad's husband. I think there are only two Jakes, one of whom is dead. -
I'm too lazy to count so I'm just going to assume I'm 17th. This chapter was a perfect blend of laid-back vacation and white-knuckle tension. I too have my doubts about the French government's willingness to go against the powerful de Grand-Pré family to satisfy the whim of an American businessman. Regardless, all this waiting around on board is holding up the most important activity: Stef's restocking of Travis's wardrobe. The poor guy is having to resort to wearing someone else's clothes not to mention the nakedness in the hot tub. 😮

@PrivateTim, there was a third Jake? I just did a reread and can only think of two (Brad's high school frenemy who slept with Sam and Brad's current husband). Who was the third? -
I do feel kind of sorry for Caroline. I agree with @Carnelian: she's too modern for her time. Probably the most modern thing she did was choosing Granger and engineering things to ensure she could marry him. They really were a great team until she allowed her own desires and ambitions to supersede Granger's to the detriment of their family. She played her cards badly and lost. I really hope she turns up in person before the end of this book; the ensuing drama would be epic! One disagreement with @Carnelian's assessment: Granger might prevail on Davina to help host a few dinners, but he'd never trust her with anything important. I expect Mark has someone else in mind. Thanks, Mark! Awesome chapter.

This is one of my favorite chapters. There's really nothing better than a meticulously planned rescue operation. JP's come a long way since since the days of fire hydrants in campus stairwells and Will made an excellent sidekick. Even @PrivateTimhad something nice to say about him. Now we have a whole new cast of characters on Stef's yacht (with a callback to Albert! ), a Grand Tour to look forward to, and almost certainly a shopping spree with Stef (if only to save Travis from being naked in Pompei).

Will and JP are adorable as travel buddies. The shit has hit the proverbial fan. And Evensong at Westminster is now on my bucket list, although maybe not on a Wednesday? 🫤
