Thank you for the kind words, buddy. Seems to me you turned out pretty good in spite of those years! I do agree that the constant fear when you're a kid of being 'found out' is worrisome. I was fortunate to have been born into a family that accepted each of us for who we were. So no matter how the outside world looked to me growing up, I always felt safe and secure at home. That made a great difference in the rest of my life. It's possible I would not be writing the things I write now, otherwise.

Thank you. The elements that affect our lives come from every direction, even the ones we aren't expecting. Michael was the victim of a mistake, but in the end it served to make his life better!

Happy endings should be for everyone. But they seem not to be the rule, but rather the exception.

Fear is a normal part of the human experience, a reaction placed there by nature to keep us from harm. It's a shame that nature didn't also make it equal among humans in how they learned to deal with fear, and master it. Fear is important, but it can be crippling to those that cannot find a way to handle it. Especially in kids, who don't always have the experience needed to separate rational fears from irrational ones. Bullying does need to be addressed by society, and by the law. To have a young person's life potentially derailed for good by some idiot sitting at the top of the aggression scale is nothing short of a crime.

Well, the thrill of roller coasters and ghost houses is something that excites us, true. And people everywhere indulge in some seriously dangerous hobbies. But I think these are more 'neutral' fears than those generated by facing off against one of our own kind. You can get killed skydiving or skiing, but being hurt or killed by one of your own kind for reasons you don't even wholly understand carries a weight with it that the other experiences do not.

Thanks for the kind words. I used to write stories more like this one, when I first started out. Some of them are here, even. I've been having a lot of fun with Charlie and Doors and stuff. But I guess every now and then, the need for a return to earlier times takes hold.

I also believe that fears come seeking us. No one looks for fear. Dealing with fear comes natural to some. But for those that are crippled by it, a helping hand is sometimes needed. Mike dealt with his fears. And yes, he very much wanted to pass that along to Pat. Thank you!

I was never bullied, either. But I saw enough of it, and I saw the fear in the eyes of the bullied. I knew a guy in high school like Pascatorre. Always mad, never reasonable. By the time he was 22 he was serving time for assault. I'd be surprised if he is a free man today. Once you experience any sort of fear yourself, you usually gain a some empathy for others undergoing the experience. It's never pleasant.

Thanks. Fear is probably the hardest of all emotions for young people to deal with, because it takes experience to learn to manage fear, and they simply don't have it. Still, some of them learn quickly to deal with it, but some get broken just as quickly. I wish it was as easy to deal with for young people as simply writing about it, and resolving it.
  13. I can see your field, and your butterflies. I have butterfly bushes in my yard, and they are visited each summer by the colorful winged masses. They are as much a part of summer as sun and grass and evening walks as the stars come out. Thanks for sharing!
  14. WONDERFUL to see the guys back! And moved on a bit, and happy at it! Enjoyed seeing our fascinating lawman reappear, too. Just waiting to see what his story is about! Great to be back in town!

    The story

I stood in the front yard of my father's house and gazed up into the maple tree that shaded the walk. A warm spring breeze moved the branches in slow spirals, and the leaves rustled with the eager voices of new life. The police had just left, the report taken in great detail, along with a dozen pictures, and the thing itself, cut down from the tree in which I had climbed and played as a small boy. Fag. I could still see it hanging there, even though the police had taken it away. Old c

Michael finds himself in a predicament: someone knows his darkest secret, and hates him for it. But who? A brief tale on the subject of fear.

They do shine. Poetry can evoke many sorts of responses. These evoke pleasant thoughts and spark pleasant memories. They're both winners!

    Chapter 9

Wow. I have to say that I have never had a single nightmare in my entire life. Or, none that I remember. I don't think I want to get more closely acquainted with them, either. Interesting group you've assembled here. All four of them have some level of need for or caring about one or more of the others. This can make either a very sweet little family or a very testy little powder keg. I vote for the former. But sometimes the fuse gets lit, even if the powder doesn't go off. So I'll wait to see. These are some very likeable people. I'd like to see them get the best your writing skills have to offer, and not the worst!

I'd certainly say you've mastered this new form! They do make both summer and winter shine, don't they?

It would be nice if we could all get along. But I don't look for that to happen anytime soon, except in stories! Thank you for your wonderful comments!
  23. Mmm! Summer! What a beautiful, peaceful scene you paint. And I actually love the possibility of summer storms on the horizon, and the idea of the mountains giving them the wary eye. Summer thunderstorms are often exciting, a little wild, and very invigorating when viewed from a covered porch in the company of a special friend. 🙂 Thanks for the reminder!

    Chapter 10

"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." The old bard had it right, I agree! These trips of the imagination have no borders. I see no reason for them. They should be fun, and be a little thought-provoking, and end with a smile and a bit of wonder on the part of the reader. Seems to be working! Thanks!
