George was the voice of reason once again. The Bible is so big it's easy to choose portions of it and use them to try to prove your ideas are supported by God. God is so much bigger than our imaginations can fathom. Obviously Billy's experience there has turned him completely in the opposite direction his mom had hoped.
Brett's always tries to act more mature than he really is. That's why he swears so much too. He thinks it makes him sound older. Growing a beard (or at least trying to) is just another attempt.
Thanks Noah! Indeed, there was a lot of rehabilitation that needed to take place in a lot of characters. Billy and Brett both had some growing up to do, and challenged each other to mature together. I'm glad you have found such wonderful connection to the characters and their adventures!
It kind of comes out of nowhere, doesn't it? This was a fun one to write. Brett has gone through a lot in the last few days, and he doesn't quite know what to do with it all, so he takes it out on his mother. And she slapped him, which really set him off. He was already irritated, that pushed him over the edge. It's never good when Brett starts to stew in his anger. Once it's unleashed, no one is safe.
Definitely a mixed bag of emotions going through the boys. They just went from their biggest fight to their first time having sex in one hour. Quite the yo-yo! Brett thought he was ready but he really wasn't. Now he finally has to deal with what he's done.
Thanks Noah! I think it's important to deal with the issues you're talking about and talk about them. Too often we hide those feelings rather than face them. I'm glad this story gives people the chance to see what it's like to be at this point of desperation, and to know it's okay to get help.
Em is much more perceptive than Billy gives her credit for, and she's known him his whole life so she has a perspective that Billy is blind about. He really thinks nobody has figured him out.
Oh Billy does have issues, that's for sure, but nothing too terrible. He'll be okay in the long run, but getting through the teen years isn't much fun for many of us!
I knew I was stretching it when I wrote it. I probably should have bumped Cold Winter up a year. I think it would have worked better. 9/11 would have been fresh though, and I didn't feel lie addressing that too much. Oh well!
