Good lord! So many good comments, and such a bad author not replying! Jack would be very intimidating to a boy like Billy, who is already a nervous wreck on a good day. He threw up, for goodness sake! As for Paula, well, she's had a long time to process Billy's sexuality. I'm sure it didn't work out how she thought it would!

How could I have not caught this before? Sorry dude! Yes, Jack was definitely out to silence Billy about the affair. He barely gives two shits about Joey.

And now you know why Brett and Joey are so close, even if they don't realize it there's a connection there. I like your description of Dr. Reilly's appearance. I didn't go into too much detail about her (or Billy didn't at least) so you can kind of make her look like anyone you like!

Dustin's parents aren't the only abusive ones in the story. Jen just goes about it differently.

Thanks Noah! I am quite proud of this chapter! Brett's day of reckoning had to take place for him to move on from his past. Just comparing the way he reacted to his mom slapping him to the way he reacted here shows how far he's come. As for Billy... Well, he's not exactly the bravest kid in the neighborhood, is he?

I call this the "baptism in blood" scene, where Brett finally faces his day of reckoning for all the bratty things he did in his past and becomes the person you met in String. Dustin destroyed him so completely that there was nothing left of the old, monster asshole Brett who once told Dustin he was glad his parents abused him. Brett wanted to change toward the end of Rehabilitation, and was on the road to becoming a better person. That moment when he stood back up after getting his ass kicked is when he became a man, in my opinion.

Thanks! This was a rough one, seeing the man who you thought was invincible brought so low is brutal. But it was out of his own vulnerability that George was finally able to have the conversation he needed to have with Billy. -

Thanks! George's journey hasn't been easy, but it's certainly been worth the struggle. Hard to imagine where Billy would be without him. -
Yep, this is where Brett started to become a man. It had to be Brett who revealed what happened to Dustin. Billy thinks he is the hero of the story, but he's not. If Billy were the hero he thinks he is, he would have not listened to Mike and told someone what was happening to Dustin. He's constantly being manipulated by the adults in the story and being forced to carry their secrets for them. He's smart, but he's not wise at this point. He believes people he shouldn't, and gets taken advantage of constantly. And, of course, he's a coward. Half the story is Billy trying to conquer his fears.

Well, now you know how it turned out, and you were on the right track. It was a bit of fun torturing Billy a little that led to him being in the right place at the right time later. And yes, having his mom there added to the building tension between them. Plus, it showed that even though Billy is super smart, having to apply that knowledge doesn't always go the way he hopes it will. -
George was the voice of reason once again. The Bible is so big it's easy to choose portions of it and use them to try to prove your ideas are supported by God. God is so much bigger than our imaginations can fathom. Obviously Billy's experience there has turned him completely in the opposite direction his mom had hoped.

It's all about the plot! lol You're right though, the vast majority of Christians would be disgusted by what Pastor Carl was spewing in this chapter.

Brett's always tries to act more mature than he really is. That's why he swears so much too. He thinks it makes him sound older. Growing a beard (or at least trying to) is just another attempt.

Thanks Noah! Indeed, there was a lot of rehabilitation that needed to take place in a lot of characters. Billy and Brett both had some growing up to do, and challenged each other to mature together. I'm glad you have found such wonderful connection to the characters and their adventures!
