    I don't exactly remember if this is something that was already mentioned so far, but I don't fear spoilers in regards to this aspect, as it's not bound to change anything. Rusty moved to the same town with the other boys at the start of high school, and his decision to hide his voice had come earlier, hence his ease to hide this part of him from his friends.

    Jonathan goes through a process, and the way he reacted during his conversation on the phone with dad is part of that. I couldn't have left him all alone on the holidays, though.

    Indeed! Jonathan is unused to acting more decisively in situations like the one at the end of the chapter. He's too polite, too afraid of how his relationship with Maddox looks, and add on top of that his own insecurities.

    Well, that's true. Jonathan has all that ingrained politeness that made him stay and try to talk to Connor's group. Plus, he has his own insecurities regarding straight boys, not entirely addressed.
