I have a rather personal problem with your writing: I can’t put it down once I pick it up. Right at 48 hours to consume this one. I feel cautious about commenting on stories long complete but I have to tell you that I loved absolutely everything about this. Rick really stole my heart. The level of detail could convince me you yourself are a plumber and a pianist. I could say the same about farming and other career paths you’ve written with such a dedication to accuracy. I don’t just enjoy myself, I learn something new every time. You send me off to consult the interwebs and I’m better, a bit wiser, because of that. Because of you. Thank you.

No comments? I imagine many readers have no words since I’m at a bit of a loss myself. My mind immediately went to “if a picture paints a thousand words” though this is entirely the opposite. These 10,253 words paint a picture, a scene, a world. Amazing. Dark, yes, but filled with the moonlight. Filled with possibilities. Beautiful. -

I am deeply moved by this magnificent, powerful prose. Raised in the rural, Deep South and being just a handful of years younger than the protagonist I am captivated by the imagery, the little things. The church key for the beer. The clock radio seemingly every house had. The respectful silence when Paul Harvey commanded the AM radio waves. Thank you for sharing this. My day is better for having read it.

I really want you to meet Mike. He’s a totally average, office worker, suburban husband and dad until he isn’t. A death saves his life. Quiet, careful and introspective, Mike embarks on a journey few middle-aged men with limited life experience would be brave enough to take. He is possessed of a metered and methodical patience that will charm and perhaps confuse you. If I impose a moral on Mike’s story it would simply be this: it’s never too late to change. Meet Mike. You’ll be happy to know him.

This chapter was great for my eye health: they stayed wet the whole time. Spilled over some, too. Won’t take much to turn that (amazing) band list into quite the soundtrack for this story. Emphasis on Billy Joel maybe? Could be either sadness or euphoria… Dickie will go down again. Fool.
