It's worth remembering that same sex marriage was not illegal in Australia up until 2004 when the then government changed the existing 1961 marriage act. Up until 2004 marriage was defined as being between two people. The change in 2004 defined marriage as being between a man and a woman.

Thank you @Summerabbacat. It seems my writing was not clear enough. It is Nathan who is 37 and included his cousins in his concerns about coming out. Previously I hadn't mentioned ages in the story, except for Benjamin turning 18. Martin is slightly older than Nathan. The story has three couples with a gap of around 10 years between each couple. To cannibalize a quote from a former Australian Prime Minister, 'never get between Rick and a bottle of champagne'. We have seen that Amelia can be a thorn from a distance which means she could be again. I love your idea @Summerabbacat, of setting the formidable Vanessa against her. It would be 'no contest'!
