This has happened to me. It's a heartbreaking loss. I could never go back and recreate what I had in that little notebook, and I tried. Sorry.

Thanks! I went into this thinking, "Yeah. Stories need an ending. That's the rule. The formula." But you did a fine job of convincing me that's not always the case, exactly for the reasons you mentioned. I can honestly say I've never started a story without knowing exactly how it was going to end, even if I wasn't sure how long it would take to get there. Maybe I should try it. Sometimes the most rewarding journeys are the ones where our destination isn't always spelled out. I've just never explored that in writing before. Food for thought.

There was an article on Open Culture about a week ago that I’m just now getting around to linking because… that’s my life. My dog actually got in my lap this afternoon (plot twist: he’s not a lapdog, but a fifty-pound Brittany in his prime), probably in an effort to pin me in place for five minutes. It worked. I sent emails. Watched some YouTube videos. I even drank a cup of coffee while it was hot. Pretty epic. Check this out if you never have before. Less to compare your have-read list to his and more to appreciate the wide spectrum of authors and genres he includes. My list would include The Witching Hour. I freaking worship that book. I remember reading it as a teenager and drawing genealogies to keep track of all the characters. Don’t even talk to me about that crap TV show that just came out. Cats enjoy resting on plush blankets, carpets or anything else soft and likely to attract fur. Like every item of clothing I own.

Helpful article, thanks. This feels especially relevant: So...more writer confidence, I think, helps a great deal when it comes to restraint and keeping my experience simple and effective. That’s the key word there...effective. Of course, how effective a story or passage might be depends heavily on the reader's experience and desires. So, I say... be true to your established style and do what feels right.

I have a very good friend out your way. My youngest daughter's godfather as a matter of fact. He and his partner came for Christmas the year she was born. I thought the weather was perfect for their visit. Cold and crisp, snow hanging thick on the tree branches... They couldn't wait to get home so they could get warm LOL! Thanks, as always, for the thoughtful comments. Christmas can be a brutal time for so many. I'm pleased to have delivered a bit of joy. 🥰
