Somebody let me know when Brad stops being an asshole. I'll pick up reading where Mr passive-aggressive "I get to f**k anybody I want no matter what it does to my partner" gets off his high f**king horse. If this story truly portrayed how gay relationships worked, I'm really f**king glad I'm single. So when the iphone antenna debacle broke, Steve Jobs got an email from a disgruntled user, pointing out that if he held his phone a certain way, it dropped calls. Steve's response: "Hold it differently". What an arrogant response to a problem that (come on) you KNOW they knew about and deliberately released a flawed product anyway. Apple consistently breaks old versions of software when they update theirs. There's no concern for the user community with regard to if they're affected. If you don't like it, then either don't upgrade or don't buy an Apple. Otherwise whip out your wallet because you'll be needing to pay for some upgrades. Apple's control over their developer community is legendary, but really goes over the top when they tell developers that they can no longer use middleware to develop software, because Apple wants to control that. The app store is a walled garden, and Apple can and will, at whim, pull your apps out of it if they duplicate any current or future Apple functionality. Apple's message is, consistently, "screw you" to both developers AND users. I don't get why people put up with it, but we do - I have an iphone4 and I have a mac mini. The mini has a terrible graphics card and has been relegated to being a fancy slingbox, basically. The iphone4 has great things about it, but I'm in the walled garden, that's for sure. And it's not going to get better. The success of the ipad and the iphone will dictate how the MacOS will evolve in the future. Do you think it will be more open? I don't. I think the walls of the walled garden are going to get higher. I'm glad others have had good experience with the "genius" crowd at the Apple store. Mine has been terrible. My mac mini, has been repaired there 4 times. I know it had a bad motherboard. It took 4 visits (one each for the RAM chips, another for the power supply, and another to FINALLY replace the motherboard) before they would replace it. All 4 times they wiped the OS and reinstalled it for no reason. I think that no matter what, anyone that uses a computer needs to keep this in perspective: No one at Apple has your best interest at heart. It's all about making dough. Apple has learned to play their audience, right down to when Steve needs to put on the black turtleneck. Just don't drink their Kool Aid, is all I'm trying to say.

If you use a program like Calibre you can pretty much do anything you want - convert from HTML to PDF to epub to .lit or whatever. It works really well AND it gives you a way to move your books on and off the nook really easily - pick a title in your library, right-click it and choose "send to device" in whatever format you want, and it will convert it on the fly. It's kind of an itunes for ebooks only without that pesky "purchasing" option. Or you could just use a PDF printer like PDF Creator, print the story to PDF, and it should format for PDF just fine. Then use Calibre to transfer the file to the nook (or just drag the PDF to the nook's My Documents folder). Both calibre and PDF creator are open source and free.

Ah, Meridian. Do they still have a navy base and a training school there? I spent some months in Meridian. Not a bad town for a navy kid, but all wanted when I was there was to get to my ship and go to sea. I'm not sure how much what you do for a living overlaps what I do, but I'm in Michigan and you speak truth - you have to go farther to get work, and your price has to be aggressive and your work has to be really tight or you don't get called back. I do a lot of PC support stuff, and I've set my business up so I can do almost anything remotely and I've got software that lets customers pay me by credit card to do it. I don't care where you are, if your computer can hit the internet, I can fix it and bill you and get paid right away. Second thing I've done is set up service contracts. Between those two things I've been able to get a longer reach for customers and I've been able to keep a nice steady income (between 5 and 6 grand a month is service contract, which makes up about half my billing). Just some things to think about.

People hate what they fear. Fear leads to hate. Fear comes from ignorance. Ignorance closes the mind to teaching. if you're not open to teaching, you'll accept what others say as rote. The thing about this is that you don't need to have an opinion of your own. You can just take what other people say, slap it into your belief system and be done with it. Other people's belief systems may or may not have elements of violence. Accept at your own risk.

Yeah JJ is JP's nephew and is a cousin to JP's kids, and is also Brad's nephew. Here's where my mind gets blown (from another thread): JJ is also a first-cousin-two-times-removed from his own father. I think. It makes my brain hurt: Tonto is his grandmother via Bitty. Tonto is also the sister of his, uh, grand uncle (?) Jack Crampton, who is also his grandfather via Jim Crampton. Heard a lecture once where the speaker divided people up into four circles that surround you. First is family (especially families of our own making). No matter what, spending time with, doing things for, family is top on the list. Second are your closest friends. You'll drop what you're doing to spend time with your closest friends as long as that agrees with the time you'll spend with family. Third are just "friends". You won't necessarily drop what you're doing unless what THEY are doing is something you want to do. Fourth are acquaintances. You know them at school or work but really don't have much else to do with them. The speaker basically said "Close friends are those who will invite you to go bowling, and you'll go to support them even if you don't bowl. Friends are those who, if they're bowling and invite you, you'll go if you want to bowl but decline if you don't." MY take is that of that rusty old saying: a best friend is someone who, if you get thrown in jail, won't be there to bail you out. They'll be there sitting next to you in jail, talking about how awesome that was.

Well, to clarify my post a bit, I don't judge other people's relationships. The age/2+*7 is a good rule of thumb for me, it seems to track with my experiences.

The rule I've always thought appropriate is to take your age, divide by two and add seven. Anything under that is "creepytown" So I'm 47 / 2 = 23.5 + 7 = 30 or 31. Corollary: there is some 87 year old dude out there who wants to rock my world. I say if there's an 87 year old out there who can handle it... <G> Also, there are some smokin hot 40 year olds I'd call a boy toy anyday.
