Jay & Miles - 2. Jay's Sister

Jay confronts his sister...

POV: Jay

“I can’t believe you asked him that!” Linda’s voice went up an octave as she looked at her younger brother standing by his ancient blue Ford pickup. Jay looked around the school’s parking lot, but it was nearly empty this late in the afternoon; while taking Miles home, he remembered that he had to pick up his sister after cheerleading practice, so it meant another trip to the high school--two in one day was one too many!

The high school lot was at the north end, mostly gravel, extending behind the school and to the football field with its metal and wood bleachers. Beyond that, was a smaller single lane path leading back into the large wooded area which served as a nature lab for the school, as well as a secluded place for other activities after school hours. The building itself was mostly one story tan brick around a central courtyard, the two story gym at the north end also held the main cafeteria; the southern end beyond the classrooms, was another one story rectangle set back from the main building--this time without the central court--it held the 7th- and 8th-Grade middle school classrooms along with a smaller cafeteria and the Industrial Arts shops. It was the height of late-Fifties style with its roof overhangs and metal-framed banks of five horizontal windows paired for each classroom. Everyone prayed that the air conditioning would work, for only the bottom light of each bank was operable to let in even a slight breeze.

“It’s only for pizza, for Chrissakes! He’s a nice guy, and…”

Jay’s sister waved that aside with one hand. “He’s not even in 4-H! He isn’t in any groups except Art Club...I heard he got switched out of Algebra Two so he could take Poetry! What sort of guy does that?”

There it was again, his sister’s obsession with all things popular--just so she could fit into the jock/cheerleader clique like her other useless girlfriends. She had the same blonde hair he did, but her eyes were brown like their father’s, while Jay’s were nearly the same shade of blue as his mother’s. Besides hair color, they shared similar facial features--hers being only slightly more delicate than his own--other than that, they were completely different personality-wise. Jay couldn't care less about being popular!

“Ya know what, sis? I’ve had class with him for four months now--I think I know him better than you! We have a lot of interests in common--music, books...we even like the same jokes--so you can shove that attitude up your ass!”

Jay yanked the massive door open and jumped onto the worn cloth seat from the running board, not caring whether his sister got in or not. He turned the key and punched the starter button with a vengeance, causing the engine to kick into life with a bang of backfire and a cloud of blue smoke. He turned the knob on the big chrome radio in the dash, and the strains of Foghat’s Slow Ride came through the single speaker once the radio warmed up.

“Miles is my friend--you don’t pick mine, just like I don’t comment on those brain-dead jocks you chase after! Either get in and shut up--or walk--it’s your choice….”

As the truck left the parking lot, Jay felt good; I told my bossy sister where to get off--and it’s only one more day until Friday--when Miles and I can start sorting things out!

Wow, it's fascinating that Jay told his sister in so many words that there is a correlation between the "brain-dead jocks" she chases after to date, and Jay's interest in Miles. It's a very clear statement, whether he wants it to be, or even realizes it, that he's putting his romantic intentions for Miles into clear focus.

I like that. It's subtle, but still ballsy! This Jay is turning out to be a strong boy.

Jay did do that didn't he? He was just telling his sister where to get off--or so he thought--but he'd already told Miles he was cute, and we haven't seen things from his viewpoint yet....

By the way--I meant to add in the first review--if Miles is 6'1, subtract about eight inches gives Jay a height of 5'6, 5'7 on a good day--5'8 in cowboy boots, which he likes. I'll make that clearer in the story. :)

I was cheering too. Vain, shallow, status chasing, high school kids are awful - and the sad thing is that it's even worse today with all the social media and focus on being popular and good looking and famous.
We were so lucky in a way back then, you only had to worry about kids in your own little circle. And in my town, that was a pretty small group.

Jay seems like a man on a mission in this chapter, highlighted by the last line. It was cute that he forgot about picking up his sister because of being wrapped up in Miles. By showing us what his sister was like, you showed us much more about who Jay is...and I got to say...I like this guy. By describing his sister we get to visualize what Jay looks like, through the comparison. That was a very interesting way to do it. Details like the one speaker in the thirty year old truck add subtly to the feel of the story. The little bit I know about Miles tells me that Jay is the kind of guy he needs. Well done...Cheers...Gary

Jay is a nice guy--and that makes him somewhat popular--but he is grounded and not one to let it affect him--he doesn't see himself as anything special.

Jay did a great job standing up to his sister. It's hard to go against what is considered popular- especially if you have a sibling who values popularity that much. jay is shaping up to be quite a strong young man.
Jay is pretty sure of what he wants, and tries his best to make it happen...more adventures await for both boys.

Jay driving off to leave his sister to walk home was a perfect touch. I recall those little high school cliques and her type so well. She seems the type to bitch and whine about it when she gets home though. If you were looking for it, you can pick up what Jay is really saying there. It's likely a good thing that Linda seemed oblivious to it.

Early days, yet drpaladin. :) Jay knows his own mind, and won't be pushed around, that's why he took the chance on Miles. (Un)fortunately for me, I wasn't in any popular groups in school...pretty much a loner with just a couple friends. If I fit any sort of classification, it was the art/geek crowd--I was into drawing, sitar music, british comedies and reading sci-fi...I liked learning, but weird stuff like von Daniken were also faves. I also liked writing, but was then trying to do sci-fi without success.

So, Jay isn't afraid to stand up for himself or his friend/man. That's good. He's got guts, knows who he is and what he wants, or is starting to.
I've talked to so many gay men who are older than I am who still aren't out, still are afraid, still have no partner. I'm not judging, but it can't be easy. I know it's easier where I live. I wish it was the same everywhere.
My point is Jay seems to not be afraid.. that's good. Cuz he has the right to be himself.
Thanks CG

Thanks Tim, Jay is definitely aware of himself and has had the support he needed, as you will see in future chapters. There will be times for reflection ahead, and days which will be trying, but Jay knows what his goal is.

Still reading, with a ways to go yet. Sorry Jay and his sister only seem to share elementary genes. Great that Jay knows his own mind and won't fall for her opinion.

I realize I'm a year or so behind everyone else in reading this, but at least you get a new opinion that it's a nice piece of work!

Thanks.

Thanks Geron! I love answering reviews, so keep on reading.

Don't read reviews of the rest until you get to that chapter--it'll let out information you shouldn't have yet. It looks like Jay's confidence could be a complement to Miles' lack...let's hope they can find common ground on their pizza date.

Good on Jay, again, I wish I has his courage. Guess being popular with lots of friends helps. Not sure if she knows, but being so caught up in self image, wonder how well things will go down with the sister when she discovers he's gay. Really getting into this, thanks in advance for what looks to be a good read.

Thanks Goodie!  Once past the first few chapters, I gave up the prompt idea since it looked like this might be a recurring story rather than just a few short pieces.  In the process I decided to deal with some lingering personal issues related to my life then, and a decade later when I unofficially came out.
Later on, other issues will be dealt with, though I try to keep my players real...you can be assured that Miles and family are people, since Miles is me as I was then.  Events might be fictional in places, but I have the tendency to toss in both real events and things too.  I know what's real and what's not, if you get stuck, ask me.
