The Poetry of M - 7. Incense

For Jim and Deej . . . and Skinnydragon, and now my dear Papa. May they all live inside the colors that have no names.
And now for dear Lacey too. This one's hard. He was far too young. Far too young.
Before your Remembering Stone
I softly here kneel
I am detached but not alone
I deeply do feel

Within my quivering hand there is
A scented symbol
A sweet offering before his
starkly etched sigil

One mere stick wrapped in blackest coal
A wand of Incense
When once lit works to seek your soul
beyond death's black fence

My love rises on scented smoke
A holy sweet perfume
That this Incense seeks to invoke
Your life beyond this tomb
RIP

This is stately, and I like how you consistently avoid saying the word for certain things, like 'headstone.' I think you should check out Tennyson's great love poem to the dead man he loved, In Memoriam. I think you'll find a lot there to inspire your work. Good job!

Thank you!

Yes...one of my favorites is Tennyson. My other is Blake.

I was inspired by current events in my life today.

 The sweet memory of a dear friend is often hard to forget. May he smell your subliming incense up on the heaven.

Jim does as do others that have gone missing. They live on as a higher energy.

I felt much taken by this remembrance and prayer. It seems as much for us as for Jim, but your life for him brings life to this poem.

Thank you for sharing in my memory of Jim.

Thanks, guys. This has now become my official incantation for the ascended. I recite versions of this almost every night before going to bed while I do my nightly incense ritual. It brings them nearer to me and that brings me peace.

I’m glad you’ve found something like that. Having lost people myself, it feels good to maintain a connection, I think, of one kind or another.

This is a beautiful poem, Mr. M. Thank you for sharing the link on Lacey’s post. I would not have read it otherwise. 😢
