2019 - Spring - Into the Stars Entry

Himmelszelt (Canopy of Heaven) - 2. Constellation Leo

‘What is that?’ (Lily Sloane)— ‘That is the constellation Leo.’ (Zefram Cochrane)

Disgusted by incorrigible Zeus,

Hera became a jealous, vengeful wife.

Due to his relentless quest to seduce

They had to live in war and constant strife.

Throughout their realm, HE spread his pearly juice

SHE sent her lion to taint his life.

Together they wasted their chance of truce

Forgotten the beast that defied the knife.

While the fearsome lion was on the loose

Over all Nemea terror was rife.

Their king needed a hero, cunning and spruce

At last, Hercules took the monster's life.

Among stars he flies, the mighty lion

Ironically killed by Zeus’s scion

Since I saw this scene in Star Trek First Contact Constellation Leo is always on my mind.

I like this a lot.  Hercules may have slain the beast, but not the reason for its existence.  Well done.  :)

I love Greek mythology. My mum used to tell me stories from it before bed when I was a kid. This poem does the myth justice. Also, that video made me laugh. Thank you.

I love Greek mythology too. While I wrote this I read so many interesting facts I had trouble to focus on the lion's story. Thank you for the comment, Thorn

How marvelous you recount the myth this way. I shall look for stars differently now.

Thank you, Parker! This is one of my poems with an accent. It led to some interesting conversations with my nephew, the result is Foray

Love the rhymes, Love retold myths, they always add something to surprise. Having just read "Voli me Tangere" this is a brilliant addition to the theme. Thanks.
