The Thousandth Regiment - 14. "Night moves above, in the zone of respite"
.
---
14. Night moves above, in the zone of respite,
And all things appear unknown to our eyes.
Our palms grind against the butt of rifles.
We slink doglike, trained servile to orders.
The horizon stands red-branded with towns.
From circles fall chaff like steel stars' bluing.
We check the undergrowth, then turn off the road
And feel moving air, dew and moistened hay.
Possibly the foe lies shadowy in fields,
Watching our enlarged silhouettes creep by;
Biding glances, able to strike at will.
And we, lost at night and filled with unease,
Cry via the soul of our destiny's lot,
Which festers through time as an open wound.
