Foolproofed - 5. Week Four

Foolproofed Week 4

Day 22

Learning to swim in the Mediterranean Sea,

sounds marvelous,

slipping through your beloved, but too big, seahorse swim ring when touched by the first serious wave,

seeing greenish water, foamed by air bubbles rushing by your wide-open eyes while you sink to the ground,

is terrifying.

Being pulled out by your shocked father, and wrapped into his strong, albeit damp arms,

is exhilarating.

The ensuing gelato with all the toppings you can think of,

is comforting and—delicious.

(Learn to swim)

Day 23

When the coffee is cold

And the machine too old

It's time to buy a new one

as your bond is totally done

So I am told.

Now the coffee hot,

I burn my mouth a lot

and still mourn the lost friend

curse the new blend

and plant tulips in the old pot.

(unprompted)

Day 24

I'm dashing through the house, 'cause surprise guests come,

scan every room panic! 'cause unwise guests come.

Plates, mugs, and some... snatch between the couch cushions,

grab a tray, pick up socks, ill-advised guests come!

Cat hair everywhere, nothing in the fridge,

Car keys? hurry to the store, 'cause prized guests come.

Toss a salad, feta, eggs, olives, and seeds,

throw something on the grill yum! 'cause five guests come.

Snacks, drinks, nicely arranged, I’m wearing pants check!

the rest pushed in the closet, chastised guests come.

Honey I’m beat.

(guests)

Day 25

An old moon lying akilter,

among a few pale stars.

Will he overbalance and drop into the sea later?

Night drunken he might even get a kiss by the sun,

only witnessed by the baker.

(Epigraphs for Ted Kooser’s Birthday)

Day 26

April. The month is swarming with poems,

pens, pencils, fingers and ideas fly,

only to be scrapped in May.

Some, however, live and fly away as sparks.

(Too Many Poems)

Day 27

We talk,

there’s no distance to be measured in meters we can’t overcome.

You listen,

I bare my soul, maybe touch yours.

You answer,

I can’t hear you, but the echo is enough.

(To the Reader)

Day 28

Dear...

Are you dear to me?

Am I yours? Or faithful? Or even sincere?

To whom it may concern.

(poem as a letter)

Thank you for reading my poems! Any reaction is most appreciated. :)

Your swimming lesson is a lovely memory, and now I want gelato!  I love the reuse of the beloved coffee pot.  I think we can all relate to the curse/blessing of unexpected guests.  I like the personification of the drunk moon.  Love the April poem! The reader poem is perfect.  The letter makes us question our words.  Great week!  Only a few more days...

I loved reading your poems through the month! They are thought provoking, endearing, and entertaining in turns.

Day 22 brought a vivid image to mind with your excellent sensory details

Day 27 makes me think of all the conversations I have with readers alone in my head 😅. But I agree, the echo is enough.

Thanks so much for sharing your work! I will miss all the poems very much now that NaPoWritMo is over.

I'm happy you enjoyed this year's NaPoWri Mo.

Day 22 describes a very frightening event of my childhood with a happy ending.

I like you're talking with your readers in your head too.

Thank you for reading my poems and sharing your thoughts.

Days 22 and 23 appealed to me right away. How easily I form attachments to things - appliances, furniture, cars - it seems silly, yet your poem speaks to that. Day 26 was excellent. I felt poems swarming around my ears like a new hatching of gnats. Thanks for sharing all of these. They’re fun to read!

You won't believe how much lukewarm coffee I drank until I parted from Gino. I'm glad you understood.
