Poems for Sunday - 2. Reunion

Reunion

We decided to postpone our annual weekend –

August instead of July.

It’s always been July, but,

you know how life happens, schedules conflict;

there’s always an excuse not to.

Forty years ago we started what became an annual tradition,

an anniversary of sorts,

to celebrate friendship

and pick up the pieces after diagnoses, divorce, and loss.

We never expected to say goodbye to one of our own,

especially not one week before our special time.

What was important in July

is now insignificant.

We’ll still meet—

A weekend of remembrance, shared grief, and anguish.

We’ll raise a glass to the empty chair in front of the campfire,

talk of poems and prayers and promises,

and honor a friend gone too soon.

The title is a conglomeration of the titles of two songs that influenced these poems - Wort zum Sonntag (Word for Sunday) by Die Toten Hosen and Poems and Prayers and Promises by John Denver. A huge thank you to Aditus for serving as both editor and beta reader for these. And thank you for reading. I'd love to hear your thoughts and comments on these.

After 4 yrs away, I visited the un and spent four days with my oldest school friend, sat on his terrace overlooking the Atlantic and remembered, relived the highs and lows of 50 yrs friendship, of lost friends, friends lost to AIDS, our school friend HIV+ for 35 years - a real survivor.  Such moments validate life.

thank you mr V, again you have got me thinking.

You are so right about these moments validating life.  I'm glad I got you thinking again.  Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment
