Poems for Sunday - 1. Sometimes

Sometimes

I embrace the gray and give a middle finger to the sky

as I dance in the rain.

Other times, I scowl at the stranger in the mirror,

remembering less pounds and wrinkles;

sleepless nights easily remedied with an extra cup or two of coffee

the next morning at work.

Now caffeine is the cause of insomnia instead of the cure.

I stopped shaving years ago and don’t give a shit

when it makes other people uncomfortable.

There was a time when I would have been mortified.

I may have celebrated fifty anniversaries of my birth,

But that doesn’t mean I’m old.

Instead, I’ve decided life is just beginning.

You go, Gurl! Compared to me you are still pooping yellow. :P  Love this poem, Val. Sometimes we have to give aging the finger and carry on... if we open our eyes in the morning, we're winning.

:gikkle:  Thanks, Gary.  I'm glad you liked it.  I hope we keep on winning for decades to come

Given being at ease with myself is a comparatively recent phenomenon, I wholeheartedly agree you, Val. Grow old (dis)gracefully as you choose.  🤨😄

If only we knew then what we know now... Given the choice, I choose disgracefully! :P

It seemed like I had one of those days more often as I got older, but like you stated, there comes a point when you just don't give a shit any more.  Thanks for that little trip down memory lane for me.

Yep, you're doing this the right way, for example by writing a poem  and tell us how you think about this. Love it!

I hate the stranger in the mirror too, but fifty isn't old. I think it's reasonable these days to aim for triple figures, and maybe buy one of those curved mirrors from the fun fair.

Somehow I missed seeing this comment.  Sorry about the late reply, but thank you, and I think I'll get one of those mirrors!  :P
