Daß ich der schönen Körper Sprache wüßte

Und brauner Glieder runden Glanz entnähme,

Daß eure dümmste Rede zu mir käme

Und mich erlöste von der Nebelküste!

The Public Baths

O to speak the language of beautiful bodies

And derive from bronzed limbs the well-rounded sheen,

And rescue me from shores of foggy seas.

Thank you, Parker. These "Bathhouse" poems of his are equal parts erotic charge and feelings of unworthiness. Therefore, they're sexy and sad -- a combination most especially resonant with members of the LGBT minority, like the poet.

So much great art was squandered on the fields of meaningless "glory" and (French and English) empire expansion during the First World War. No wonder the survivor-artists from this carnage never felt good enough; that's why they called themselves "the lost generation," and did so in tribute to those possibly better than them but in their graves much too early.
