Romantiker-Bildnisse

Herrn John Höxter gewidmet

1.

Noch bin ich nichts als zweier Lippen

Sehnsüchtig aufgeworfnes Weich,

An dessen Bögen Falter nippen,

Und noch sind meine Blicke bleich

Und oft verschlossen im Geträume

Vor früher Blumen starkem Duft . . .

Und noch verlocken mich die Bäume,

Aus deren Laut der Abend ruft.

Romantic Portraits

Mister John Höxter bestowed

1.

I’m nothing if not a pair of lips

Lovingly thrown open to yield

The soft bows where a butterfly sips

‘Neath eyes whose colors are concealed

Locked more often than not in some dream

As an early flower’s scent falls . . .

And the trees sway to temp and redeem,

While the voice of the evening calls.
