Tales of Inanimate Objects - 1. Chapter 1

Claustrophobic darkness. Despite that, everything was snug. The tight confines almost felt comfortable. Packed in with my brothers and sisters, we waited thinking about our uncertain future. I knew I was bad, but what was wrong with standing and doing nothing?

Every now and again, our surroundings shifted without moving us. The first several motions came moments after we came together, but as we existed, they occurred less frequently. It was like being pulled forward slightly, only to come to a jolting halt. Pull, halt. Pull, halt. Sometimes it happened consecutively. Other times sparsely.

Then we felt a swift one, and it didn't stop. It was filled with twists, turns, and a couple smacks. I could barely keep track of the sequence. When we heard a light ripping around the circumference of our home, we steeled ourselves. In a moment's notice, sunlight burst. Our roof was torn away!

Two strange, pink objects pinched one of my sisters, taking her away into the unknown beyond. When the roof closed, we were no longer sure of anything. Where was she taken? What lied beyond the top? Even though we had a bit more space, none of us breathed easier. We conversed quietly, unsure if the monster phalanges could hear us.

Time passed slowly. One by one, my siblings were taken by the fleshy invaders. Nineteen became sixteen. Twelve became nine. There was no tightness left. We were bumping into each other as our home bounded up and down. For hours, we were sideways, then back to the rocky ride. The walls around us became crumpled, and our backs paid the price. Dents were a new threat. Afraid of being torn, we did our best huddle close to prevent damage.

The roof opened once again, and I'm pinched! This was it. Was I destined for greatness? Death? My fate was uncertain.

Gone was the robust scent of my family. It was replaced by blowing winds and globs of moisture falling dangerously close. Even though they missed me, one of my ends became enclosed by wet pressure. Looking onward, there were numerous fleshy monsters passing by at a blinding speed. What was this? A society? It was unlike anything I've ever seen! They moved so freely, yet compact and evenly spaced at the same time.

I heard a click, and my dry end lit ablaze. The fire intensified as my head was sucked on. I was weightless. All of my thoughts left my mind.

And I felt the fury boil. I questioned my body before, but as the power sizzled inside, I had no doubt now. I was created and destined to scorch this new world. Smoke buffeted my head, and it fueled my new ambition. I had no care for anything. If I was on fire, everything else should be too.

The burn was slow and soothing. I was nudged, and the ash at my feet fell. Good riddance! It only served as a reminder of my newfound resolve. I hope others see it as a reminder that I shall not be trifled with.

As the flame neared, I panicked. Just as quick as I received power, it was being taken. No, worse yet. This power was going to be the end of me. Before I could consider my final plot, I was flicked away. The rushing wind was bittersweet. I landed on a cold, wet surface. In a blink, my embers faded.

Cold. Everything was cold. Was this death? It sure felt like it. As I rolled with the breeze, my light was extinguishing. I only hoped I caused enough damage.

“ Nineteen became …” is the place I caught on. Brilliant, Aaron, absolutely brilliant.

Sadly you’ll likely bring out the non-smokers, or worse, the former smokers to chastise the rest of us in the smoking section. I’m more concerned with the littering at the end 😉

Now if you’ll excuse me I’m gonna step outside and home wreck some Marlboros…

Me thinks I'll join ya with my Camel Wide blues.

I don't think he believes you.

Genuinely, I am. I hate it because doggos are just the best, but I'm not a fan of getting hives.

By the way... I told you you need to stop that nasty habit.

It's depriving your brain cells of much needed oxygen. No wonder you're warped.

Aaron's a grown up man. Stop nagging. If he wants to smoke, let him. I would frequently scream at my mother when she nagged my dad for smoking cigars. What is it with you people? Can't you live and let live?

Aaron, buddy, I'm sending you a carton as a Christmas present. 😁

Chill dude.

You people? Use your big boy words. It's bitch. And I wear the title proudly.

I know damn well Aaron won't stop smoking because of me. One sentence does not constitute nagging. Don't get your bike chain in a twist.

😘

Nope. This is a sore subject for me. All Mom accomplished was make Dad miserable until she died. The day after her funeral, he had a cigar in his mouth. When he was living in the ALF alone, my brothers and I kept him well supplied.

Last time this one woman told me I should quit smoking because it was unhealthy, I suggested she stop eating because being as fat as she was, was unhealthy.

And the worst part is the hypocrisy. Most of the meddlers think nothing of drinking and getting drunk although it's unhealthy too.

For the record, I'm a reformed smoker, but quitting was my choice.

I'm sorry I hit a tough subject for you.

My biggest pet peeve with smokers is their uncontrollable urge to light up as soon as they step outside the door of a public place like a restaurant, forcing everyone else to walk through a cloud as they enter or exit. For those of us with asthmatic family members it can mean a trip to the ER if there's a bad reaction. Been there. It sucks.  Would it really hurt to refrain from lighting up until you're 20 or 30 feet away from the door? Geesh.

Other than that, if someone wants to smoke,  that's their business. I've been known to light one up on a rare occasion.

Forgive me?
