Hmm.

Now I don't know where they stand. If there's no sexual attraction and no romance, shouldn't there be friendship? I want their friendship explored. Their interpersonal relationship is hard for me to grasp, and now I sit here wondering what's going to happen. Maybe that's a point in and of itself though.

I can see how this resolution is a bit … anticlimactic 😅 However, I'm in favor of an open ending most of the time. They'll have one more stop—and who knows what will happen 🤷‍♂️ But then, we have this section from the previous chapter:

Rhys sat up as well and was right behind me. The next thing I felt was his embrace. I would have expected it to be a sexual pose, loaded with eroticism, but surprisingly it wasn't. I first wanted to pull away, but now I let Rhys hold me. It didn’t feel like we were lovers. It didn’t matter at this moment. We were just friends … I just realized, we hadn’t been up until now. We had never been close before. Physical, but not close.

This has been an interesting journey with these two. They discovered more about themselves.

It was like a very good European movie, the ending was not what you would expect, but superb anyway because like all good movies and stories it leaves you feeling fulfilled, satisfied, on an emotional high, as if the characters and their story is not just fiction, but real. Excellent! And the final chapter was superb in its descriptions: We were sitting at a knee-high wall in the backyard of the motel, barely covered by the porch roof, while raindrops were falling from the summer night’s sky. ... looking into the pitch-black night outside the range of the Chinese lantern hanging over our heads. Really, really, well done!

Thank you! I'm glad, you like it. Some scenes were like a movie in my head and I tried my best to transcribe that on the page. I did everything right, when I was able to invoke that image in your heads.

Yeah, I feel, the twist is the problem for most, who expected something else entirely. So having you read it till the end and finding it satisfying nonetheless, means a lot!

You never know what people are coming here to read. Myself, I'm looking for those less than abundant works of literary merit. Those well written stories that stand out from the mass. Stories which grab you with the writing quality, the characters, plot and emotions. Great stories. This was one of those stories.  

Much of the “labelling”/self-identification found me floundering, with terms I had never heard of before.  Nevertheless, I find the ending very good and authentic to their situation.   An enjoyable, if challenging, read. Thank you 🙏

That's a good example of "you never stop learning". New labels are created every day, some are more specific, some more broad. As long as more and more people find one that fits them or maybe come to the realization, they don't need any, that's a good thing, in my opinion.
