Time and Nature - 1. Chapter 1

Five poems exploring how the elemental forces of time and nature affect us. These are mixed forms, and number four is a short prose poem.

1.

As I look at my life, I grope unseeing for tomorrow
The future is unviewable; a blizzard of
blinding milkiness and brutal wind,
white noise and banshees

As I look at my life, I flounder in blinkers
Behind, the past is stark, a heated desert,
shimmering sand and fluid mirages carry
both truth and lies

I shield widened eyes as I look at my life
The present is a cool green oasis
safe and sheltering, filled with
strife and hope

2.

Time is oft quoted as a river
Some travel by canoe
clasped in safety like
lover’s arms

Other brave souls stand
on dangerous rafts
facing tumultuous rapids
Ready to fly from the
balls of their feet

3.

I have entered the autumn of my life
Many times, I’ve seen the seasons change
Spring, summer, and fall, but
I fear my winter as it will be
the end of things, the final act
Not again will I see Spring

4.

Autumn - when cold air runs and leaves fly. Hands shoved into pockets bravely refusing gloves. Some fools still in shorts, knees knocking. Trees become rainbows, some on fire in reds and orange. The wind makes skeletons of them all, but the hardy forever greens. Nature knows it’s time now to sleep. To huddle below and wait until the flying snows give up under the sun.

5.

I’m lonely and wishing for you
How long will you be away?
Will you return to me
on a peaceful summer’s day?

Perhaps you’ll travel in autumn
when forests amaze
as colours of a sunset
set their leaves ablaze.

Or will you come in springtime?
Over the melting snow
when the air is warming
and the Galanthus start to grow

Like @Wayne Gray, I fell in love with Number 5 immediately. It’s beautiful. I can recognize myself in Number 3; I can feel the change of seasons. I shivered at Number 4 as I pictured the fools in their shorts, and again when I read about the wind making skeletons of every tree. These make a fantastic set.

Thanks Parker. I'm glad some of these moved you and you felt compelled to say so. :)

All of these were truly well done; but 2 and 3 really touched something in me; I think because of my age, they resonated more with me than the others but so enjoyed them all.

Thank you for reading them. I'm glad you liked 2. As the author, it's very clear I wasn't sure whether people would get it, but I'm delighted that some did. Thanks again for your comments and for reading these.

#5 might be about another person, but your words took me to that place where I am missing myself... and that serenity and peace of mind when my world feels in balance. At any rate, a superb poem.

I've traveled in canoes and on rafts during my time on earth. I think I needed both, but I'll always choose the canoe now.  :) Another great poem.

I felt the fear and darkness of #1, but it works so well with the last word being 'hope'. Thanks for these. Cheers.

There's always hope, Gary. I like your take on 5. I hope you find that place. I know what it's like not to have peace. Canoes feel like the best place for me as well. I admire those raft riders from afar. Thanks for reading and your comments.
