My Twentieth Year - 28. A Holiday Postlude

Poem No. 56

A Holiday Postlude

Toe trimmings and tree trimmings

lay together in a bag.

After Christmas, after New Year's,

they're considered something of a nag.

What if there were a Christmas tax:

on sack, box, and carrying crate

on ropes, ribbons, and Scotch tape

on bows satin, and angels in pose

on pictures of reindeer, and on Rudolph's nose

on Christmas tunes, and church to attend

on tinsel gold, and cards to send

on 'good ole times,' and many a friend

on trees green, and carolers in white

on sheep, and every shepherd in sight

on wreaths holly, and berry mugs

on mangers, and clearance sales in floods

on jolly elves, and seasonal duds?

What if there were a Christmas tax

on the things that mean Christmas to us?

Christmas tax .... sad day. Such a rush to put it all up, and take it all down, it feels such a non-celebration sometimes. Good poem AC, thanks! I liked your 20th year!

Thanks for your review and support, Tim. It was not very easy (emotionally) to relive this year in my life, but it's good to have it in a usable format.

There are more poems to come from this time. I hope you will want to rad them.

Thanks again!

Enjoyed the poem, AC, and the concept(?) or the wonder of it all.

But then, as I thought about it more, I realized that Christmas is a tax. It taxes us to the extreme.

A neat little poem to seal up that twentieth year of yours. The year produced some deep thoughts.

I wish I'd have been twenty in your twentieth year. I would have lightened you up!
:lmao:

Thanks for the review, Skinny. Truth is, I probably would not have accepted much of your friendship back then – I was pretty messed up, not to mention, dumb. In any event, it's a nice idea, and I thank you for it : )

I like your play on tax and taxing. It's very true.

Thank you for reading this entire collection. I appreciate it.

What an ode to Christmas ambivalence. But a Christmastax! I enjoyed this thought provoking postlude.

Thanks for the review, Parker. And thanks for reading all of my 20th Year poems. I can't promise Year 21 will be material better, but I do think I came out, so there's that at least :)

Thank you again
