Shoulder to Cry On - 1. My Shoulder to Cry On

A sleepless week, a notebook, a pen and a very, very special person made this possible...

Calls, one after the other;

Problems... too many for me to sort.

Just sat through the night in silence;

With nothing to say for my day

A heavy heart is what I carried with me to the next day.

Burdens, each heavier than the last;

Chores... too many to handle.

Exhausted, I looked around at the mess,

That I didn’t get a chance to clear.

A weary body is what I dragged to bed each night.

Dreams, oh so elusive!

Nightmares... too many to ignore.

Sleepless, I toss and turn;

Warily eyeing the bottle on the nightstand.

The used pages of my notebook bear witness to it all.

A fresh breath of air;

A new smell – of freedom? (I hoped)

My eyes grew wide, my heart leapt with joy.

Could it be... could it be my ‘Shoulder to cry on’?

The weight of my unshed tears was what made me hesitate.

* * *

Broken promises, over and over;

Old wounds: dug up and raw...

Your words seemed too good to be true;

Was it really ‘You’ that I saw?

Too many nights I had hoped,

For someone like you to come along;

Someone who would tell me it’s alright –

I didn’t always have to be so strong.

Together we could fall apart,

And then pick each other up.

You didn’t really know what your words did to me,

The hope flared. It just – wouldn’t stop!

Promise me, tell me, when I take your hand

You wouldn’t ever leave.

It’s almost my nightmare, back again:

One step; then would I rejoice, or grieve?

Your hold is strong,

On my hand, my heart and my gaze;

The drop-off is just a few steps ahead;

The light in your eyes doesn’t let my trust faze.

The smiles break free –

The glee in us, unbidden. How?

We’d been waiting too long for each other,

We can confidently leap off the rocks now!

The heavy stone weighing us down finally gone;

The lightened souls soar – Into the Unknown!

* * *

This is my first attempt at poetry.. so... Please let me know what you thought of it :) Thank you in advance! Hope you liked it.

There's a big difference between poetry for the sake of poetry and honest pouring out of the words inside one's heart, and I think you did that. I loved it! I also loved the cadence of the first section. Very interesting, unique. I liked it.

Wow, I'm glad i touched your heart! i guess thats what we try to do when we write isnt it? And this time, with the poem, i had some help... The emotions made the flow the way it flowed. I had no idea abt poetry before i wrote this. and i literally stared at my notebook thinking , 'wow, I wrote this? it's a poem!' lol. Thanks again for reading and reviewing it! :)

To a common mind, unknown comes with a feeling of darkness, uncertainty and may be fear (at least to me and many people that I know of). You have the incredible ability to look at unknown under bright sunshine rather searching for it with a tiny oil lamp (!) and this poem just proves that... And that is probably the biggest source of inspiration to me till date... thank you and I am proud of you... :)

(No need to respond to this here- I just felt compelled to write something against this poem, because this is my 'favorite' among all your works so far - hungry to see more :P )

Okay, review below mine, so sweet! Hehe. You lucky lady :P

Well, a nice start to my day, reading such beautiful poem. Agreeing w/ what other's said-- you can tell that this poem has personal implications, which, imo, means it conveys emotions that much better. It does so well, in fact, that I could draw a personal connection of my own.

Look at me, reading poetry and sorta getting it :P Great job Frosty!

I love this poem and how the emotions just leap off the page. Emotions are a hard thing to write about and I think that you did a beautiful job with this piece. You truly have a gift, being able to bring such strong emotions to your work. I look forward to reading many more works by you! Keep up the great work.

Cailen Poem Rating OVERALL: 10/10

Content: Even in your poems you show a master of setting a scene to build a powerful message, It carries well and the message comes through clearly.

Flow: As mentioned it is telling a story and it builds an emotional climax and allows you to leave with the strong feelings it expresses.

Poignancy: Masterfully Done.

Grammar: Would expect no less than perfection from you ;)
