Confused - Until Bart Met Noah - Prologue. Prologue

Senior Bart Hamilton was Rockaway High School's star on the cross-country team ever since his sophomore year. He liked running. It needed his full concentration. Breathing, measured steps, consistent pacing, all helped to keep his mind off the biggest question in his life. Nobody else knew it, but he was unsure of his sexuality. Some days he was excited by a girl, other days a boy. Since the CC season started, most of those thoughts were about another boy on the team. A freshman, Carlo Marini, had medium length bright blond hair and blue eyes. He was smaller than Bart, but being in ninth grade, that wasn't surprising. Carlo didn't act it, but he looked a little feminine. Perhaps that's what attracted Bart to him.

Bart had considered trying to find out if the cute freshman maybe liked boys. But Carlo's best friend, Karl Marlow, was the only freshman on the varsity football team. He was one tough customer and he always watched out for Carlo. At that point, fear prevented him from saying anything about it. Bart wasn't a large boy, most runners weren't. Getting broken in half was never on his bucket list. He held his tongue throughout his senior year. That didn't stop him from helping Carlo succeed in their races, though.
