Carlos made no secret that poetry wasn't his favorite form of literature. Yet he tolerated mine, and even commented on it occasionally.  These came to mind and made me think of him right away.

Four Defiant Skyscrapers - 1. Four Defiant Skyscrapers

These Skyscraper poems remain as they were written, without revision. If I could send them to Carlos for him to read over his morning coffee, I would do so in a heartbeat.

i.

You can talk

about Jesus and sin

and we must watch you pray at the game,

grooming impressionable youngsters for your faith;

yet you say we must remain silent

and hide our pride away

from your eyes.

ii.

Our story

is not for you to write,

or edit according to your whim;

it’s not wet clay to shape or shatter as you please,

but long engraved on true hearts that shine

with the same pure, bright flame

as your own.

iii.

Who are you

to say what I can read

or tell me whose hand I ought to hold,

and which specific god we are required to worship;

that you decide the cross I must bear

and what clothes I wear while

you kill me?

iv.

I can choose

to fly a rainbow flag

and wear my purple unicorn tie,

or simply plant my yard in colorful flowers,

but attraction is etched in my genes,

so you get no choice in

who I love.

Thanks for reading these, and for remembering with me.
