Update on Back

S.L. Lewis

I spent yesterday in the hospital. Again. I went in about 10:30, got out about 2. Not to bad.

But, the nurse who was assigned to me...couldn't feed the damn pain killer into me without bursting my vein. Pretty much, shoved the IV from where it was in my vein to sitting on the muscle...after poking another hole into it.

So I have a nice big bruise and I'm still sore like you wouldn't believe. Me and my vicodin are once more having an affair.

Tomorrow, nice bright and early, I get to go talk with my primary. Today, in about an hour or so, I'm calling the surgeon to talk to him, see how things will work out with the surgery and what not. I'm hoping to get it done soon because, really? I'm in to much pain to deal with this.

:(

Here in the US at least, you have the right to REFUSE any staff to be in your room at any time for any reason. So if you come across said nurse again and you have the power, use it. I once kicked a nurse out of my room after she stuck me 5 times to try and get blood. I truly hope the surgery gets you feeling better.

Blood tests...sigh...once had three different nurses in my urologist's office stick me a total of four times before they could get one little vial of blood for a PSA test. In the process, one of the nurses stuck herself with one ef the used needles, so she and I both had to be tested for HIV. I told them to test mine from the vial they just obtained. :P The next time I went to that doctor, she (the careless nurse) was no longer employed there. :P

As for gallstones, I recommend having the gall bladder removed (cholecystectomy). It can be done laparoscopically with three or four tiny incisions. Mine was an outpatient affair taking about four hours from check-in to heading home. See: http://www.webmd.com...-for-gallstones

The gall bladder's only purpose is to store excess bile. Who needs that?

Good luck! If it hurts, get rid of it.

I won't be letting her near me again. Unfortunately for me, my veins are tiny and roll. They hate me, I swear. But luckily I complained. *nodnod*

And so do I...really I do. *sighs softly*

I think that's what the doctors were talking about, removing the gallbladder instead of just the stones. And as long as nothing really nasty is going on with my body, I should be home and in bed for a few days. me and pain don't mix.

And I was lucky. The nice paramedic who came for me put the IV in (and it would have STAYED if the nurse hadn't messed with it) and a GOOD at her job tech pulled the blood. *sighs happily*

I plan on getting rid of the darn thing. *pokes the side with a glare*

Ask if they have a butterfly needle available. I demand they use those because I have the same issue with rolling veins. The needle is really thin and it has these little plastic wings on it they grab to insert it. Usually it only takes once to get a vein when they use it on me. Most med staff don't like to use them because they take longer to fill the vials than a regular needle will because the blood goes through a thin tube before hitting the vial. However, when it's their arm being stuck they can choose, while it's mine I demand what I know works without them needing to stick me multiple times.

While I was in the hosptial for my gallbladder surgery (yay, I got rid of the sucker) they used butterfly needles on me once I told them it took forever to get a real needle into my arms. *shrugs with a smile* I'm glad though.
