A healthy respect for the power of lightning is nothing to worry about, but when it becomes paralyzing, professional help for astraphobia should be investigated.

Anyone suffering from it should not consider relocating to my home state.

Florida has the highest frequency of lightning in the United States. There, sea breezes from the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico converge over solar-heated land. This lifts the moist air masses that host thunderstorms. Florida is also the state with the highest number of deaths from lightning strikes.

This would seem to indicate a fear of lightning is NOT a phobia, since a phobia is an unreasoning fear. Actually seems pretty reasonable.

We had our daily afternoon thunderstorm early today. It's a typical summer event you can almost set your nap time to. It got dark, thunder rumbled, and we got a little rain. An hour later, the sky's now more blue than gray.

From 2001 to 2010, there were only 280 deaths or injuries from lightning in the US. This translates to a 1 in 1.1 million chance. This assumes you aren't running around with a twenty foot metal pole in a lightning storm.

If you're afraid of lightning because of danger, then you should run with terror from any motor vehicle. The chance of dying in a motor vehicle accident are 1 in 114.

A phobia is an abnormal or excessive fear though.   I know that a spider is quite unlikely to kill me, especially with our current level of medicine, and that they are even beneficial in killing other insects.  But if I see one on my kitchen floor, I will still jump about a foot in the air, and kill it with extreme force and malice.

Thank you, though not for the information. I laughed more than I have in years.
