I suspect this was due to the transcontinental railroads being built across North America.  Many of the became ghost towns, or are only marked by the cemeteries still left.

You are so evil Aditus.  Just like one of my best friends here in Thailand.  He's from Hamburg. I had to go look, but google translate failed miserably without  the umlaut.  I finally found it.  Hillbilly indeed!
