The Oxford English Dictionary records the earliest known use of the noun "yaffle" appeared in 1842, in the writings of H.J. Daniel.   As a verb, the earliest evidence the OED has is from 1847, found in a dictionary compiled by James Halliwell.   is also reportedly used to describe greedy eating, particularly in Royal Navy slang.
