What about the rude authors?

One of the pet peeves of most online writers is the lack of feedback. Tons more people read than ever say anything back. That is why, as an author, I try to make sure that sure that I at least drop a little note back to someone on the latest chapter I read. I'm much less diligent with ongoing fanfiction stories though. Mostly because that is on FanFiction.net and keeping logged in on that site is too much of a hassle.

Any way, I bumped into some really high quality stories on Nifty. Unfortunately, there is no way to find all the author's work. It is spread through a couple of different categories. As it was particularly good, I sent the writer a note. I didn't hear anything back. I didn't think much about it. I figured it probably got caught in the spam filter or some such. I kind of forgot about the author, but I tripped over a new story he had written. It was, again, very good. So I sent out another message. I haven't heard back, again. Now, I must say, as an author, I always reply back when someone emails me. I check through my junk mail folder every day. I'm sure I've missed one or two over the years, but I make a strong effort to get back to anyone that takes the time to write to me. When someone doesn't, it is rather annoying.

This author, whom I'm not going to mention, by the way, would be offered a Hosted Author spot here at Gay Authors. Though, I'm not sure I'd do that now, given the sloth that the author is showing.

Myr-

Nifty has a Nifty Prolific Author Page which indexes the work of authors with a substantial body of work. It's where I discovered Freethinker- one of my favorites.

There is a Best of Nifty website and discussion forums associated with Awesomedude.

Try using a gmail address. I've found that gayauthors.org is automatically blacklisted unless I specifically whitelist someone. Whereas almost everything sent via a gmail addresses gets though.

I, too, try to take a minute and respond to every email I get. If the reader took the time to write me a note, it's only considerate to respond, and besides, it's what all of us authors are always complaining about anyway... never getting feedback, or at least useful feedback. You and I both know how much time and effort and emotion goes into writing something, and how many bodies it takes to get the thing edited, proofed, betad, HTMLed, uploaded, graphics made for it, site link updated, the fact that there's even a site to post it on, announcements made, and so on.

I think what I'm more guilty of, is not sending a note at all. Instead, I usually give the link to a bazillion people and maybe even say something about it in my blog.... like sharing the wealth. I guess if I'm being honest here, I'd rather have more people read what I've written, than get feedback from one or two.

I think I'll point out also, that so many of us authors are HUGE readers, too. I, for one, spend more time reading than almost anything else. I guess I try to make my contributions in other ways, writing, editing, brainstorming, supporting, mentoring, lots of other -ings.

The only other thing I'd like to point out, devil's advocate style, is that we all have real lives... jobs, mates, kids, family, responsibilities, and there are a LOT of readers that seem to forget that while listing their demands and whining that you haven't gotten their favorite story updated or finished, but it's a losing battle, because when you do, they only want more, or when you finish it, they demand another. Ahhh the price of fame and popularity...

I'm sorry the guy blew you off :(

Hugs,

Vivian

PS. If you write to me, I'll reply, I promise :D

I always try to send a note to an author. I'll do that twice. If I don't get anything back, I quit sending.
