CRV Forum to shut down

On July 31st, the forums over at CRVboy will close due to a lack of interest.... (yawn). Okay, just kidding. Not about the forums closing, but about the yawn. To be honest, I'm not very surprised. The Simple Machines forum is very boring, and there was no encouragement from the site administration to post over there. I guess it's kinda sad because it didn't have to be that way, but like they say, water under the bridge.......

I think the next thing to go will be the entire site. There are a few good authors who post there, but the guidelines for posting work there are incredibly restrictive. I tried to submit all of my work to the owner, and he acted like I was trying to crowd out the authors who didn't have as much completed work as I had. That was back in 2006, so God only knows what would happen if I tried to send in all of my work today.

I also feel like the design on the front page is horrible. Whoever is responsible for the design of that page should go get themselves checked for color blindness. I guess if I had to use one word to sum up CRVboy, it would be stale. It's a site that at one time had something fresh and exciting to offer, but the staff has aged with the site, and it really shows.

So what's the point of this post? Just to say that I'm very grateful to be here at GA, the greatest community on the internet. Our forums don't get old because the administrators encourage open thinking and lively discussion. Is everything here perfect? Maybe not, but it's as close to perfect as it can possibly be. I think that the lesson we can take from the closing of the CRVboy forums is that a community is only as active as its members are. We do great things here on GA, and no other site on the internet can match what we have.

It won't be long before the next forum closure comes. I predict it'll be less than six months from now, and I have a really good idea what forum it's going to be. When you have a forum that doesn't attract new users, and doesn't welcome new members to participate, things eventually go downhill. People get distracted, or life pulls them away for good sometimes. When I first came to GA almost three years ago, the membership was completely different than it is today. In fact, there are only a few regulars from 2005 that are still regulars today, but this community is bigger and more prosperous than it's ever been. Other site administrators can take a lesson from GA, but most of them probably won't. If they were going to, they probably already would have, and there would be more places like GA on the internet.

:o I was one of those regulars back in 2005. Am I stale?

You're right Nick, websites such as GA must continue to try to evolve, improve, and bring new blood in.

Actually I pop in there once a week to check for stories. I've really enjoyed all of Mike Aram, Jeff Allan, and Drew hunt. I still can't believe I never noticed that there was a forum there until you mentioned it  Hopefully if they do shut down, some of the authors there find their way to GA.

Unfortunately i think that CRVBoy went over the hill a long time ago. With their very limited new or interested members, the administration dwindled and could not provide enough inertia for the site to evolve. When a site stops its development, it no longer attracts members and that's when it reaches a halt. It's a natural occurrence (well at least as natural as it gets on the net), and not really all that sad or shocking. Hopefully if they do close down shortly, the remaining admins/members will leave clean footprints to be remembered by.

I don't think the closing of the crvboy forums is that significant. Different sites have different aims, goals and strengths. Crvboy is a small site and there's not the community crowding round it that there is here at GA but it attracts quality authors and updates regularly. Its back catalogue is impressive too. I don't know about restrictive practises but if they exist then they've been successful at least in the sense that the stories that are there are generally high quality. I kind of understand Nick's comment about stale design, but I confess, I don't much care about site design issues as long as a site has good navigation and crvboy does - it's the stories that matter at the end of the day. The small list of gay fiction sites I visit regularly includes crvboy (and the list is GA, AD, DW, CB).

When I say restrictive practices I mean that I was told that I could release one story at a time, one chapter at a time. Since most of my stories are 20 chapters or more, it would be years before all of my work would be released. Furthermore, if I wanted to release a short story, I would have to wait for whatever chapter story that was posting to be finished first. I've talked to other authors who've said they ran into the same thing.

My hope is that they see where they're going wrong and do something to fix it before they become completely irrelevant because I honestly hold a soft spot in my heart for CRVboy. After all, that was the first site to host my work :)

Yeah I'm sure back in the late 70's-early 80's CRVboy was a hot site, but since then, they've really fizzled out. They're a great place for new authors to use as a stepping stone to other things, but beyond that, I can't imagine aspiring to be hosted at CRVboy. And the authors that they have there that I regularly check on for updates are hosted at other sites like GA and Deweywriter, so there's no need for me to visit the site anymore.

You spend 4 paragraphs being critical of other forums, and only one to praise the one you're on. You're the Media Matters of gay fiction. ;)

Being a minority, we should all hope for all of us to succeed rather than expect one of us to fall.

One CRVBoy author, Kit, recently moved to GA and a major factor in his decision was the active forums here:

Yes, for me the forums are a very important aspect of GA. They make GA into a community rather than just being a place merely to read stories. They make it more like a book club rather than a quiet library.

This is a precedent which may be followed by other good authors.

I want every gay story site to succeed, but I'm definitely going to call things the way I see them. If the next forum crumbles, it'll be sad, but not a shock. Having said that, it's never too late for a site to change its course until the owner(s) decide that the time has come to shut down.

And we're sooo happy he found us :) I'd definitely love to see more great authors come to GA, where they can enjoy all of the benefits of being a part of a warm online community.

CRVboy was also the home forum site for The Collision Crew to work on the round robin story, 'Collision'.

I don't know much about CRVboy. Tonight was the first time I'd ever visited the forum...I too was unaware that it even existed :*)

As such I guess I don't have too much to say about it.

On a side note, major props for your safe sex message, Nick!!! :worship::great:

Thanks for the props, Kevin!! Can you believe that there are some people (at a site totally unaffiliated with GA) who think encouraging safe sex is disruptive and ignorant? It's unbelievable but true, sadly.

As for the lack of attention that the CRVboy forums get, yeah, it's pretty lame. Maybe they should have used an invision forum and recruited moderators that were, oh, I don't know.....good?:ph34r::ph34r:

CRVboy is staying around. Robb has reduced the number of Forum's visible. Now there's only three.

F.Y.I Nick, I am a Global Mod over there. Admittedly, the site really hasn't been that active for a long time. Several weeks ago, there was some discussion going on about Driver's stories. One of the members, an a$$ IMHO, had been over to Awesomedude's and then posted at CRV that the members there were talking about the lack of sex in drivers stories. That wasn't what they were talking about at all. That talk had taken on a more personal side. I tried to explain to him that the talk wasn't about driver. He maintained it was, even after another member told him the same thing I did.

There's no getting through to some people, no matter how much proof you set right in front of their faces. You just have to let them be, because they get off their own ideas.

That wasn't the end of it though. Imofat's joined to discuss something and the jerk went after him. That discussion involved an author who was posting a story very similar to one by Brew Maxwell. This issue would have been best served by the authors involved and not Imofat and the jerk.

I believe the main criticism of the CRVboy site here was the forum, and I agree their forum has little activity. Until recently, it was the only forum I saw that had political commentary, but the moderator tended to drown out anyone who was not a liberal democrat. I always thought a forum was a place for discussion of diverse views. I was disappointed in what I saw at CRV.

When GA began/restarted it political discussions, I had a look. As a Canadian, I read some of the Canadian political discussions, and I have to say they were excellent! There were very diverse points of view mentioned, but the discussions and responses showed great respect for each other and were a pleasure to read. I agree, Nick, that GA has done an excellent job in creating a dynamic forum.

I would like to say, though, that I enjoy visiting the CRV site for its quality works. In particular, Mike Arram, Tim Mead and Drew Hunt post their most recent works here on a regular basis, and that keeps me coming back to the CRV site. These authors continue to make this a "must visit" site from my perspective.
