I hate cops

Tiff

Alright, I'm normally not one to blog, as you can tell by my last blog date. But my mind is jumbled and I need to get some thoughts out.

Ok, the blog title is a bit unfair. I don't hate ALL cops. Far from it. Cops do have their duties and so many cops have risked their lives trying to help and save people. And by God, I love Law and Order shows, but those detectives, no men in uniform, work on real hard cases. Nevertheless, even uniform cops have their purposes. They're the first line of defense. But right now, I'm still hating them. So I don't mean to sound harsh or cruel towards that profession or whatever, as well as insult anyone who may be a cop or knows someone who is one.

However, this is in reference to the cops where my parents now live. It's a quaint surburban town in Central Jersey where the kids are mad rich and spoiled. So it's safe to the say that the cops in this particular area don't really have much crime or delinquents to deal with. A bunch of them are purely high school traffic cops--changing the lights, making sure no one skips school--but no one ever does. The high school has so called old lady teacher aides who act as the new Gestapo. One girl told me she even tried to run away from one of those old ladies and she got caught. This girl was also on the soccer team! Anyway, I digress...

What really pisses me off is that the cops here are young guys, for the most part, who enjoy their power trip, as most people do. They really don't do anything where their life is threatened. IMO, they have the best job ever. Their get own squad car; they literally get to sit around all day; they love their coffee breaks. No pun joke, I once saw four squad cars at a local coffee joint. One car was unmarked.

But back to the point: these cops just sit around waiting for people to come. They usually pull over young kids speeding and old people who may straddle a lane, or if they spot some modification on a souped up car. All these little things they try to get you for, it's ridiculous. I'd have no problem if a cop pulled over someone, or me for the matter, if they were aggressively driving, weaving in between cars, causing potential accidents on major highways, perhaps on bad weather days. Because then there's endangerment. However, I hate how they park their stupid ass squad cars somewhere obscure, near a building, or an unused road, and just WAIT.

Granted, I was speeding, so in all fairness, I was guilty and deserved the ticket, but the roads were clear and I wasn't harming anyone. And of course I chose that day to space out due to lack of sleep. Normally my eyes are rolling around and I've always spotted cops hiding in the past. The one day I let down my guard and BAM, there he is. I don't know if I'm more mad at myself for not being careful, or mad at him, and cops in general for having nothing better to do than sit around, trying to make their daily or monthly quota. It's a tie, I suppose.

It's my first ticket in five years, well, real ticket, as in moving violation. I got a parking ticket ages ago. So getting my first ticket since getting my license isn't too bad. I'm hoping when I go to court and talk to the lawyer, they'll be lenient because of that fact. No guarantees, of course. But I'm hoping to drop the points down to two, and then I can possibly get rid of the remaining two with a defensive driving course. We'll see what happens. No matter what, my parents are (thankfully) cool about it. My mom didn't even blink. My dad brushed it off within seconds. He's too damn stressed with his job and new boss to care about my ticket delinquency  But I still feel shitty raising the insurance. Eek.

Again, hope I didn't offend/piss/whatever anyone off. I just really, really needed to rant.

Poor you... how fast were you driving? And -- you have to go to court?? Gosh, that sounds scary. How much will it be, do you have any idea? Hmm I think I'll drive more slowly... for a while, it'll probably last about a week or so...

You should live here. In our little city our cops are extremely busy with drug busts, gang activity, and other serious crimes they barely pay any attention to traffic problems. The only time a speeder is in danger is during daylight Monday through Saturday when the three motorcycle cops are out running radar, the one gray community service van is out photographing speeders in school zones, or you're so blatant a cop has to stop you just to protect his own ass. In our town, the posted speed limit is actually the minimum speed you're expected to go; everyone, including the cops, truck along at ten to fiften over the speed limit all the time, unless they're following any of the numerous gray hairs who commonly drive ten to fifteen below the speed limit.

Hmmm. I can understand why you're frustrated. About 10 months ago, the Tempe City Council decided that they would install cameras in every single damn streetlight within 3 blocks of the main University campus. They gave everyone 1 free ticket to adjust, so things weren't all that bad. I got 1 ticket that I was able to get out of because that week I was driving my mother's SUV and she just called and told them that wasn't her :P . So if you take that into account, the cops being there is not much different than the cameras. Actually, it's way better. Soon enough, you'll stop seeing cops hiding in dark corners in all major cities. It's just a lot more profitable to have cameras installed.

Yeah, stupid cops.

I hope a course would reduce my insurance...by at least two pints, I guess

I think the ticket itself is 200. Then if I get the points off, I have to pay money in exchange. So not too sure how much the total will be.

I've been driving more carefully myself....but that won't last long...lol.

Ugh, motorcycle cops. I've seen a few of those. Damn. It's hard for the average driver to keep track of patrol cars, unmarked cars, and motorcycles. It's a battlefield.

Hmm...a minimum speed limit. That's interesting.

Heya Maddy!

I have heard news about installing cameras in every traffic lights. Some places have them, but I don't NYC or NJ have them just...yet. Jeez, that sucks. I don't know which I prefer more, the hidden assholes, or a camera.

I'm sorry, Tiff :(

Recently I was driving IN MY OWN QUIET LITTLE NEIGHBOURHOOD, and I was running late back to work from lunch, so I got to this little four way stop sign - that I pass everyday - and no one was coming (I had good visibility and could see that), so I just sorta slow down and halfstop, and lo and behold if there wasn't one of those dreadful cops SITTING THERE a block away watching and waiting (probably because he knew there was no point in stopping at this intersection and that a lot of people were going to do what I did!).

He was a total jerk too, didn't talk to me at all, just took my license, made me about 15 minutes later, and then gave me a ticket for $230 <_<

EDIT: I've already gotten like 3 or 4 of those stupid by mail red light tickets!

Okay... not to be the downer and all but... It is the law, we know that it is the law, and we know that there are consequences if we do not follow traffic laws. Now, I know that you said that the roads were clear and you were not harming anyone, but someone could have came out of a unseeable driveway or side road, a dog, cat, deer, whatever could have crossed the road, whatever. Accidents happen yes, but they are preventable if you follow the traffic laws... they are made for a reason. Granted, I speed once in a while (well, a little more then that...) and I have broken other traffic laws.

Lets look at it from the cops prospective. They see someone speeding, they do not know if there is someone farther up the road that could be hurt by the person speeding. They do not know if the person speeding is a habitual speeder. All they know is that someone is speeding and that it is their job to reprimand that speeder. They are not doing it to be mean, they are not out to get you. They are just doing their job, and possibly preventing an accident. They are called accidents because that is what they are, accidents. You may think that nothing could happen if you go a little over the speed limit, but the speed limits are set at what they are because it has been determined that that is the safe speed for the given road.

Now, I know that it is never fun to get a ticket. I have been known to speed, luckily I have never been pulled over.

I just wanted to look at the other side of the issue here. Yes, some cops are real assholes, but there are assholes in every profession, it is unavoidable. A lot of times cops are fair, they are people too and they have made mistakes too. Maybe I am looking at the issue in this way because starting monday I will be going to school to be a police officer.

Good luck in court, hopefully you can get the ticket down.

Did bring up good points Kurt....

I'll put it like this they don't always like pulling people over and giving out tickets, at times depends on the cop will let you go, There are roads they can be a higher speedlimt, that is safe to go that speed, at times . like speed limit near my house is 45mph usally won't pull you have for going over 5 or ten.

I do have to say at times I do not think cops should be alot to go really fast unless it's an emerngency. . Disagree's again about 90 percent are a**holes. Maybe it's just where I live, but plenty are on powertrips. There has been two of three redicous cases involving friends, but also though it was a country rule that was thrown out.

You're absolutely right, Kurt. Cops are just doing their job. However, I didn't know their job, all day long, was to sit in a concealed area and wait for someone to break the law. I thought they might patrol the streets, be around to help someone. It's the waiting and hiding part that gets me. In a way, it seems like they are out to get me or people in general. Because let's face...cops speed all the time. They really do. I've seen them do it in front of me. And it wasn't an emergency because there were no sirens. However, they would NEVER get pulled over. And even if a cop was off duty, he or she would just say they're a cop and they would never get "reprimanded." But that's life. It's a double standard, just like every other profession.

Cops are definitely real people. My sister's friend was or is going to be a cop. He's a real nice guy, too. And I didn't mean for this blog to insult anyone. I'm not calling all cops assholes, or you a future asshole. I was just ranting. I know I shouldn't have been speeding.

Heya Kevin,

LOL, unfortunately, half-stops don't count. Actually, I always do a full stop at a stop sign. It's a habit, but I do speed, and don't signal. That's my downfall. Sigh.

But yeah, it does suck when they just sit there and watch and wait. It's definitely some quota I think they want to fill. Or maybe that's just my bitter thinking.

So are your insurance points way up there because of those other tickets from the mail? 230 bucks for a ticket is steep. I fear mine will be even more money. Life blows.

I hate it when cops do that. My parents live on a small army post in Germany, so I have to deal with Military Police. Imagine the whole young policeman attitude amped with the whole soldier attitude and even more authority.

My first week here they pulled me over for my friend not having his seatbelt on in the backseat... I kept thinking how hard they must have been looking in my car to see him.... We get point taken off our driver licenses, so they don't issue tickets. But so many points and they can take your license, they probably enjoy doing it hah.

Military police?? Yikes. I'd be soo scared. Do they stand up real straight and make no facial expressions? Wow. I'd bet my hands would shake giving them my license.

I've never gotten pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt in the backseat. How could they even notice that on a moving vehicle? Super-vision, no doubt. Damn. Anyway, the points system and possibly losing your license is bad too. But if I get enough points, the insurance will go up so much, I'll be buried in debt. Oh, and it is possible to get our license taken away, but umm, I'll try to be more careful from now on. :D
