I've got a personal website - it's www.rjws.com

I came up with the name when I was with my ex - my initials are RJ and his are JWS so it was a merge of the two names. I don't use it for much - occasional updates. More use it to put up private directories of family photos so my brother and sister can see them. When I split with my ex, I realized I could still use the RJWS moniker by changing it to mean Robert Jordan's Web Site - cute, eh?

So - a week ago, I got an inquiry about the domain. A guy who's name is Ryan J.W. Sanderson is a drummer in Quebec and uses rjwsdrums. He wants to shorten it and brand himself as just RJWS - his initials. So he wanted to see if I was willing to sell him the domain.

Now - Pro's for releasing the website: I don't use it, it reminds me of my ex, someone else COULD get some use from it. Con's are: I have a personalized car license plate of "RJWS COM", short domains are in limited supply (there are no free 2 or 3 character domain names I've heard, and available 4 character domains I'd guess are also rare), I have a bit of nostalgic connection to it (I mean, I've had it for like 10 years now).

Asked him (and flat out told him it was a crass question): How much would it be "worth" to him? I mean - I'll definately need to recoup costs at least as the domain is registered through 2013 but over and above that. He replied back that he was just a musician - he really doesn't have a "budget" but understands where I'm coming from. Ie - lol, a total non-answer.

So... should I... The strongest argument to me still is, he could use it and I don't.

But...

Dunno...

:-)

Robert,

It's hard to tell if the domain is really worth much to the musician. If he won't say, how do you know? The only place I could find him was a Myspace page. http://www.myspace.com/arnoldisnumerouno It has the name "RJW$" and it appears he performs shirtless.

Don't know if there is a going price for domains published somewhere. If you could get some money out of him, you could just go for a Myspace or Facebook page for your content. I suppose he's not the type of guy who would give you the shirt off his back. :P

I'm already looking at other domain names that I would go to instead, and still probably stay with my current hosting company (iPower)... I don't want to want too much for it but I don't want to devalue it either. Heh - funny thing is, when I searched for RJWS, I found an actor, Ryan J.W. Smith - I could start a bidding war ;-)

Funny...I was just posting about karma on Arpeggio's blog. There's something about that random act of kindness that really has no equal. Here's a guy you don't know, probably young (maybe hot...that could sway Dantongue.gif), trying to get his career rolling. It's Christmas. You don't need the website. You don't really use it. You're probably not ever going to use it. So what if it's only three letters long. Shit, maybe he's the next Sammy Hagar (I figure you're old enough to relate to that reference). biggrin.gif

I'll let you work your way through that, but you might want to think about leasing it to him for a couple of years Don't know if you can do that, but if you could, charge him a buck and give him a couple of years. He makes it, he pays you big. He doesn't, you get it back.

Getting a new car license plate that doesn't plug the web site is one more of your costs you need to be paid for if you give up the domain name. Not to mention all of the hassles and work involved in changing your car registration (and insurance forms, etc.). And you'll need to redirect everyone to your new website name. I've even visited it myself a few times, linked from GA.

If he ever makes it big as a musician, then he'll have money to buy the domain from you at a respectable price. In the meanwhile, you don't owe this guy any favors, unless you like his music--or his shirtless body. I say, don't let it go too cheaply.

Well - I haven't decided if I'm selling yet, but since the new domain was just $17 for a year, I registered it - so I now have www.trebs.us

Why can't he get a .ca domain?

Well - I finally made a decision. Got asked by Ryan again this morning so told him:

Gotcha - at this point, I'm not using the site but it is a commodity (sorry) - I would transfer it to you for $1500 or best counter offer... Most people I checked with were settling on $2500 so this is a discount because you were pro-active..

And he came back with thanks, but no thanks. And I'm fine with that. I still own the site until 2013 - so who knows, he might change his mind or someone else might want it. For a 4 character .com domain, I think I'm being fair, though, I do think I'm going to start using the trebs.us for all future postings - I just like the name better.
