Story Archive Tech - What do you need?

Fellow Site Members:
Welcome to 2024!  There are going to be some big software changes this year as the software that powers our website, Invision Community, goes from version 4.X to 5.0.  The big key under the hood changes for this version will be modernizing the software and removing some of the legacy weight it has been carrying for a long time.  Their main target seems to be making the software even more mobile friendly. With over 50% of our traffic coming from Mobile, more speed, better function and more stable behavior on mobile should be seen as a good thing.

The knock-on of these changes is that we have to basically heavily rewrite our Story Archive to work in the system.  We have already started working with a new developer that will be helping us with improvements when that time comes.  Before then though, we are working to address some of the shortcomings of the current system, some lingering bugs, and missing features.

As we will be working on the system more actively now, I'm going to open up a question to everyone to make sure we what we can on improvements.

If you could have just two things from the Story Archive on site, what would they be? *

* Useful clarifications:

  • Functions and capabilities of the Story Archive on Gay Authors
  • More authors adding more stories is not a software function

Please comment below and we'll see what we can do.  One thing already in process is adding Story Status to our Genre Top 10 blogs.  This information is pulled via a report we have built into the system and the report is getting updated.

I would be very happy, if you could consider the following points:

1. When selecting a story and one clicks on the author, one gets to the author's story collection. Good! But if I then click on the author anywhere, I can never get to their profile, only always again to the story collection. Unless I search for the member, I cannot see their profile. Maybe I am missing a point (and click) :)?

2. Blogs/clubs/activity. I use the "All activity" a lot, but it just is a lot what I would consider "irrelevant" (sorry). I tried using the options in the "My activity stream", but then I missed stuff. My first request would be the ability to unfollow a thread. My second would be some clarification around blogs/clubs/updates. I do not know what bugs me there, but it "doesn't feel right". Sorry. Probably the word of the day which is posted as new entry when I go to "Writing World" I get hundreds of word of the day entries which drowns all other content of that blog/club.

3. I don't know whether it has to do with a club's visibility settings, but through the All Activity I can see posts in clubs I am not a member, e,g.:

I can even navigate there and form there, browse the rest of the club (navigation section of unread topics at the bottom).

I can react to the posts, but not reply.

3. "Member dashboard", another one I use frequently. The "story of the moment" selection mechanism seems to be limited. It seems to suggest from a limited pool. I get suggested the same story several times whereas there are probably a lot of hidden gems that are never seen there.

More later, work now.

Secret tip: If you're on the Author Profile page, hit the profile picture and it takes you to the member profile :)

I agree with you that some streamlining could be applied to the story archive. I know this is a hard ask as it is an "application built on top of Invision Community". I am very much looking forward to the new version regardless. :D

One thing I would love to see, but is probably too much to ask, is a way to search in the text of the stories (and including the tags, genres, etc., if possible) with keywords (and hopefully Boolean operators and modifiers).  I often find myself trying to find a story that I had read months ago where I can't remember the author or the title, just some of the details of the story itself.  Like I said, this is a lot to ask, but I wanted to throw it out there.

Thanks for the explaining of the functions above, @Myr.  I was familiar with some of those, but not all.  I am fortunate to have a good memory for things which catch my interest, but even so, I sometimes lose a story.

You can search the text of the story chapters by selecting story chapter in the search box.  If you don't narrow it down, it searches everywhere.  Tags/genres are not search able fields in the same way, however.

That would be nice if the search actually worked. No matter what I search for, I get this back:

You appear to have some sort of malfunction or virus infection.  That is, the problem is on your end, not ours.

A bug was found in the Story of the Moment feature and been corrected. You should see a larger selection of stories now.
